(Canton, N.Y.)- The SUNY Canton women’s basketball team suffered a heartbreaking 66-65 loss to Wells College Wednesday afternoon in Canton.

The Roos were playing their third game in the last five days and made a valiant comeback to wipe out a halftime deficit and surge ahead late in the second half.

Trailing 46-43 midway through the second stanza, freshman Corrine Riegel (Bainbridge, N.Y.) scored on a driving layup, was fouled and made the free throw to deadlock the game. The Express went back ahead by three following a free throw and layup surrounding a Roos turnover, but junior Kaitlin Myers (Dannemora, N.Y.) knotted the game once again with a deep 3-pointer from the left wing on the Roos next trip down the floor. With just under eight minutes on the clock, junior Brittany Crump (North Lawrence, N.Y.) converted a fast break layup that gave the home team their first lead of the day at 53-51.

Crump scored again a short time later on an off-balance shot from the left wing and was fouled. She made the free throw to put the Roos up 58-54 with four minutes remaining. Following several Express turnovers, Elissa St. Germain (Ogdensburg, N.Y.) and Myers each sank two free throws and Riegel one to give SUNY Canton (3-10) their largest lead of seven points at 63-56. The two teams traded baskets over the next minute and then Wells took advantage of several Roos’ turnovers down the stretch to pull close and eventually go ahead. Wells missed two shots in the final 24 seconds down a point thanks to good interior defense by the Roos, but the visitors were able to corral two offensive rebounds. Wells then worked the ball down low to Brittany White who was fouled with four seconds left. White nailed both free throws for a 65-66 lead and Riegel’s last-second three-pointer missed long and Wells hung on for the win.

Myers finished with another terrific all-around game for the Roos tying her season-high with 24 points to go with 10 rebounds, seven blocks, and two steals in 39 minutes. She was 7-for-8 from the free throw line and had three 3-pointers. St. Germain scored 10 points and grabbed six rebounds. Crump ended the day with nine points and Riegel and Tricia Boland (Hammond, N.Y.) had eight points apiece.

Ashley Roser led Wells (2-9) with 32 points and 17 rebounds and Kristen Ryan added 13 points and six boards.

SUNY Canton is off until Jan. 18 when they’ll travel to Fisher College in Boston for a 5 p.m. game with the Falcons.
