(Canton, N.Y.)- The SUNY Canton women’s basketball team opened their season on Saturday and played their first ever home game in the college’s new athletic facility. The Roos took on Houghton College and the Highlanders prevailed 67-41.
Freshman forward Cortney Whalen (Hammond, N.Y.) led the Roos with 12 points and a game-high eight rebounds. Junior transfer student and forward Kaitlin Myers (Dannemora, N.Y.) added 11 points, five boards and two steals.
Houghton jumped out to an 8-0 run to start the game before the Roos rallied with seven straight points of their own including two jumpers from Whalen and a 3-pointer from Myers. Another layup from Whalen tied the game at 11-11 with 13:46 left in the first half. The Highlanders eventually went into locker room leading 40-21 and would outscore the Roos 27- 20 in the second half.
SUNY Canton shot 42 percent from the floor and out rebounded Houghton 46-32. Freshman guard Corrine Riegel (Bainbridge, N.Y.) had six points and four rebounds for the Roos and freshman forward Elissa St. Germain (Ogdensburg, N.Y.) came off the bench to score five points and pull down seven rebounds.
The Highlanders (1-0) were led by Kristen Moose who had 18 points and five assists. Michelle Persons added 11 points and three rebounds.
The Roos will host Keuka College on Tuesday, Nov. 15 at 5 p.m. in their next game.
