Roo volleyball splits on Saturday at Highlander Invitational

Houghton, NY – The SUNY Canton women's volleyball team split a pair of matches at the Highlander Invitational on Saturday against Alfred State College and Lycoming College. The Kangaroos (27-5) swept a fellow NCAA Division III provisional member in the Pioneers, 3-0 (25-18, 25-14, 25-18) before falling to the Warriors, 3-0 (14-25, 22-25, 22-25).

In its opening match against Alfred State, the Roos had 12 kills in each set hitting a remarkably accurate .293 as a team on 92 attack attempts. Meanwhile, Alfred State tallied just a .188 hitting percentage on its 69 attacks. SUNY Canton held a distinct 51-24 advantage in points earned in the match.

Kelsy Cornish (Honeoye, NY) continued her strong play leading the team in both kills (10) and digs (8). Jessica Reynolds (Oakville, ONT) put down seven kills, while Robyn Carroll (Bowmanville, ONT) finished with seven digs and a match-high five service aces. Mackenzie Mynter (Churchville, NY) dished out 25 assists and Lindsay Bryer (Wilson, NY) tallied six kills.

SUNY Canton squared off with a tough Lycoming squad in its second match of the day. The Warriors put together a strong 13 kill performance to take the opening set in convincing fashion, 25-14. The Roos battled back in the second and third sets but fell late losing both frames, 25-22.

Bills led the way with nine kills, while Carroll registered 12 digs. Caitlin Grimshaw (Adams, NY) and Cornish chipped in with seven kills apiece and Mynter dished out 31 assists.

The women's volleyball team will return home as they prepare to host the United States Collegiate Athletic Association (USCAA) National Championships from October 31st through November 2nd at the Roos House and Dana Hall. SUNY Canton enters nationals as the No. 4 overall seed winning 11 of their last 13 matches.

The Roos first match of pool play will take place Thursday morning at 10 a.m. in Dana Hall against Lindenwood University-Belleville.
