Edwardsville, PA – SUNY Canton's one through three hitters combined to go 10-for-13 from the plate as the Roos earned an 11-7 victory against host Wilkes University in the opener on Monday.
Rhea Coad (Wheatfield, NY) led SUNY Canton (11-21) with a 4-for-5 4 RBI performance, while Stephanie LaValley (Champlain, NY) continued her hot hitting going 3-for-4 with two runs and 2 RBI. Kaleigh Foran (Fort Ann, NY) had three hits in four at-bats and scored four times.
The Roos jumped out to a quick 3-0 lead in the top of the first. Stefanie Miller (Latham, NY) singled home Foran. Shannon Dowling (Oneida, NY) reached on an error by the right fielder as LaValley and Coad both scored on the play.
The Colonels (12-21) responded with five runs in the bottom of the inning to take the lead. SUNY Canton hung tough plating four in the third inning to regain the lead at 7-5. Kelsey Morgan (Central Square, NY) reached on a fielder's choice and Annie Sharlow (Malone, NY) scored on a throwing error. LaValley followed with an RBI single to center and Coad laced a 2 RBI double to left center.
SUNY Canton added two important insurance runs in the fifth on a single by Foran and sacrifice fly from LaValley. Wilkes got within 9-7 scoring a pair of runs in the bottom of the sixth but the Roos regained the four run cushion on a Coad 2 RBI double in the seventh leading to the 11-7 final.
Sharlow got the no-decision on the mound surrendering five earned in the first inning. Morgan threw the final six innings givng up just two earned on five hits. She struck out four and walked two.
The Roos and Colonels took to the field for the nightcap at approximately 5:30 p.m.
