Roo softball sweeps over Pioneers on Senior Day

Canton, NY – Stefanie Miller (Latham, NY), Rhea Coad (Wheatfield, NY) and Kaleigh Foran (Fort Ann, NY) combined to go 13-for-21 as the SUNY Canton softball team earned a sweep with a 10-7 come-from-behind win in the opener and an 11-3 run-rule victory in five innings in the nightcap against visiting Alfred State College.

The duo combined for 13 hits, scored seven runs and drove in eight more in the Saturday sweep to improve to 7-8 on the season. The Pioneers fell to 4-17 with the losses.

Game 1 – Box Score

The Roos opened up a 6-2 lead after two with a pair of three run innings in the opener. Miller used a bases clearing 3 RBI double to get the scoring started in the first and Shannon Dowling (Oneida, NY) followed with a three run bomb on Senior Day in the second.

Alfred State combined to score five runs in the third and fourth innings to take a 7-6 lead heading to the bottom of the fourth. SUNY Canton brought home two runs each in the fourth and sixth innings to secure the win.

Jaedyn Ossont (Turin, NY) walked home a run in the fourth and Dowling later scored in the inning on a wild pitch. Miller hit a solo shot in the sixth and Rachel Thornhill followed with an RBI single to left field to score Desiree Pryce (Madrid, NY).

Jordan Podkladek (Gansevoort, NY) evened her record at 4-4 on the season throwing a complete game and striking out three batters.

Game 2

Foran opened the scoring in the nightcap with an RBI single to center to plate Coad. Alfred State took a 2-1 lead with a pair of runs in the second before Dowling knotted the score at two with an RBI single down the left field line in the third.

Alfred State regained the one run lead in the top of the fourth but the Roos would take the lead for good in the bottom half of the frame. Coad doubled home Pryce and Chloe Solomon (Cold Spring, NY) plated Thornhill on a fielder's choice.

The Roo bats exploded for seven runs in the fifth to earn the run-rule win. Miller hit her second homer in as many games to get the inning started. Solomon brought home Pryce on an infield single and Thornhill and Coad scored on wild pitches. Solomon scored the fifth run of the inning after Dowling reached on an error. Dowling crossed the plate on a Foran RBI single and scored the final run of the game as Kristyn Reynolds (Malone, NY) reached on a throwing error by the shortstop

Annie Sharlow (Malone, NY) earned her third win of the season on the mound striking out one batter in a complete game effort.

The softball team honored its three seniors Shannon Dowling, Kristyn Reynolds and Chloe Solomon prior to Saturday's opening game.

The Roos are back in action on Sunday when they visit Cazenovia College for a doubleheader beginning at 3 p.m.
