Roo baseball wins nightcap to earn split v. Houghton on Senior Day

Canton, NY – The SUNY Canton baseball team bounced back with a 14-11 win in the nightcap after dropping the opener 8-7 to visiting Houghton College in an Empire 8 doubleheader on Saturday.

The Roos move to 8-26 overall and 3-14 in Empire 8 play, while the Highlanders finish their season at 14-21 and 3-14.

Game 1

Houghton jumped out to a 2-1 lead after two innings as the visitors scored on run each in the first two frames. Wilson Matos drove home Travis Schindler on a single up the middle in the first. After the Highlanders added a pair of runs in the fourth, Canton responded in the bottom of the inning as Trevor Keleher singled home Brandon Welch and Christian Nazario-Cruz plated Brett Hoberman on a sacrifice fly.

Trailing 4-3 the Roos took their first lead of the game in the bottom half of the fifth on a 2 RBI single through the left side off the bat of Hoberman bringing home Matos and Welch.

Houghton regained an 8-5 advantage with a four run sixth scoring once on a wild pitch and three other runs on a pair of RBI singles and an RBI double. The Roos responded with two runs in the sixth but went down in order in the seventh as the visitors took the opener by one run.

Game 2

Canton scored four runs each in the second and seventh innings, while adding three in the sixth to earn a 14-11 victory in the nightcap. Seth Douglas hit a pair of homers as he finished with four hits and drove in five runs in the contest. Matos, Keleher and Nicolas Deamarais all finished with multi-hit outings, while Keleher drove in a pair.

Matt Hall earned his first win of the season tossing six innings, while Andrew Krotje pitched two innings in relief giving up just one earned run. Robbie Osterer loaded the bases in the final inning bringing the winning run to the plate but got out of a jam to record his first save of the season.

The Roos honored their 10 seniors Tom Brusca, Nicolas Demarais, Seth Douglas, Brandon Welch, Travis Bigelow, Matt Hall, Jeremy Baez, Christian Nazario-Cruz, Robbie Osterer and Andrew Krotje in a pre-game ceremony.

The baseball team is back in action on Sunday when it visits SUNY Cortland for a single nine-inning game at 2 p.m.
