Lowville, NY – The SUNY Canton baseball team used a four run eighth inning in the nightcap to earn an Empire 8 Conference split v. Stevens Institute of Technology on Saturday at Lowville High School.
The Ducks (12-12 overall, 5-3 E 8) took the opener 5-4 in seven innings before the Roos (3-14, 1-4 E8) came back for a 5-4 win in the nightcap.
Game 1
The Roos nearly rallied from a four-run deficit in the bottom of the seventh inning in the opener. Joseph Campbell opened the inning with a pinch-hit double to left center and Travis Schindler followed with a walk. Seth Douglas legged out an infield single to load the bases and Wilson Matos cleared the bases with a 3 RBI double to center field but was thrown out at third. Brandon Welch and Trevor Keleher produced back-to-back singles and Nicolas Demarais moved a pair of runners into scoring position with a ground out but the game ended on a fly out to right field.
Douglas led the Roos with three hits and two runs as he hit his third home run of the season, while Welch finished with a multi-hit game. Matos led Canton with 3 RBI.
Michael Mule' led the Ducks with two hits and two runs, while Matthew Pasko drove in a pair of runs.
Seth Douglas took the loss throwing a complete game giving up five earned runs on nine hits with five strike outs. Zeph Walters earned his third win of the season scattering six hits and three earned runs over six innings, while Charlie Ruegger earned his fifth save of the year.
Game 2
SUNY Canton scored four runs in the bottom of the eighth in the nightcap to earn a 5-4 victory leading to the split. Matos got the scoring started with an RBI double to center scoring Edward Malinoski, Jr. Keleher followed with a 2 RBI double to left bringing home Schindler and Matos and Ben Miller plated Keleher on the third double in four at-bats to plate the game-winning run.
Tur earned his first collegiate win tossing one and one-third innings surrendering two hits and on runs. Matt Hall earned the no-decision with three strike outs, four hits and two earned runs over eight innings.
