Rochester ends scoreless streak against Knights in men's soccer

Potsdam, NY - For the past few seasons, virtually the only inevitable certainty during a Clarkson University Men's Soccer season is that the Golden Knights would play the University of Rochester to a scoreless tie. Three straight years with no goals nearly reached a fourth on Saturday afternoon, but Alex Swanger tallied with just 1:32 remaining in the second overtime to lift the Yellowjackets to a 1-0 victory over the Green and Gold at Hantz Turf Field.

The Golden Knights fell to 1-3-1 on the season, while Rochester improved to 3-1-0. Clarkson will look to get back on track against Utica College on Wednesday when they host the Pioneers at 7:00 pm on Hantz Turf Field.

Prior to Swanger's goal for Rochester, the Yellowjackets had last scored in a 2007 contest when they won 1-0, but that goal came in the fourth minute of the game, and the scoreless streak had reached a monumental total: 524 minutes, 48 seconds. Clarkson's last goal came in 2006, but it was with four seconds remaining in the contest. However, the Knights scoreless stretch continues at 528:32.

Though the Yellowjackets kept the ball in the Clarkson defensive zone for much of the game, the shot totals were somewhat restricted. It wasn't until the second half when Rochester produced nine shots and six corner kicks that it might seem like the streak would end. In the first overtime, it appeared as if the Yellowjackets might have ended the scoreless run with a shot that bounced off the bottom of the crossbar and on to the goal line, but the ball squirted back out harmlessly and the game continued.

Finally, late in the second overtime Rochester was able to get out on a break with four attackers against three Clarkson defenders. With the field spread, even a slight slow down of Swanger wasn't enough as he was able to hit a hard grounder into the net at the 108:28 mark.

Clarkson goalkeeper Saverino Spagnolo (Ottawa, ONT) made several terrifice saves en route to 11 overall in the game while Scott Garfing of Rochester made three saves. Rochester held a 17-6 edge in shots and a 10-0 advantage in corner kick chances.
