RIT knocks out Saints volleyball, 3-1

The St. Lawrence University volleyball team's season came to an end on Friday evening in Potsdam, NY, as the RIT Tigers advanced to the Liberty League Championship game with a 3-1 win in the semifinal matchup.

The Tigers (22-16) had a sound 56-34 advantage in kills in the game, including a match-high 19 from Sarah Szybist. The Saints finish the season at 24-13 after the 22-25, 25-19, 25-19, 25-21 loss.

"We had a nice first set where we executed well. Like all season, we struggled finding that sense of urgency in the second and RIT pounced," said St. Lawrence head coach Shelly Roiger. "We fought our way back but unforced errors proved costly. I thought that was the turning point of the match. We never recovered and kept pressing the rest of the match. Our tightness and panic limited our effectiveness. I thought RIT played outstanding and they deserved to move on."

St. Lawrence was led offensively by Cristina Deschaine's 10 kills for a .474 hitting percentage, while Lexi Brown had 12 kills but had eight errors. Bethany Davis was outstanding for the Tigers, as she had a match-high 11 digs and had several key runs on her service to propel her team to victory.

St. Lawrence won the opening set in dramatic fashion, as the two teams exchanged points in a back-and-forth affair. However, the Saints were unable to sustain the momentum, as RIT hit .226 in the second set to battle back and tie the match at 1-1. St. Lawrence struggled in the third, hitting -.080 with only six kills, while RIT got crucial offensive efforts from Laiz Novaes and Amy Van Hienen, who each finished with 11 kills in the match, to take a 2-1 lead.

After falling behind in the fourth, St. Lawrence battled back to make it a match, pulling to within two points late. However, RIT was too much, as Davis delivered dig-after-dig and kept points alive for her hitters to finish. The Tigers would serve out the match for the victory and set up a date with the winner of nationally-ranked No. 16 Clarkson and Union in Saturday's league championship tilt.

The match was the last for St. Lawrence senior setter Jenna Street, who closed with 17 assists and seven digs for the Scarlet and Brown. She finished her career with over 2,000 assists as a three-year captain.
