State College, PA – Mike Reilly (Colton, NY) fired a 3-over par 75 on the first day of the 2013 United States Collegiate Athletic Association (USCAA) National Championships to sit just two strokes out of the lead. The SUNY Canton men's golf team had an inspiring first day of play as they are in fourth place out of the 19-team field at the championships.

SUNY Canton recorded a team score of 315 on the day as they bettered 15 opponents on Monday. The Roos are just five strokes back of third place Rochester College and eight strokes behind second place Lindenwood University. Daemen College leads play after one day tallying a score of 297.

Reilly started off strong on the front nine shooting a 1-under par 35 and followed that up with a 40 on the back as he finished the first day alone in ninth place out of the 106-golfer field. Zach Meade (Tupper Lake, NY) had an impressive showing coming to the clubhouse with a 6-over par 78 to tie him for 15th place individually.

David Parker (Canton, NY) came up clutch with one of his best performances of the season tying for 21st with an 80. Nate Christy (Canton, NY) rounded out the top four for the Roos carding an 82. The top four rounds combine together to create the SUNY Canton team score.

Nolan Reid (Champlain, NY) and Chris Schmidbauer (San Diego, CA) also proved to have impressive scores on the day tallying an 86 and 87, respectively.

The SUNY Canton men's golf team, who finished tied for eighth a season ago at this event, will look to continue its impressive play at the Penn State University Blue Course again tomorrow for the final round of the 2013 USCAA Championships.
