Reid sets mark for CU swimmers

Potsdam, NY – Freshman Brent Reid took little time to make an impact on the Clarkson University Swimming and Diving record book as he set the record in the 1-meter dive on Saturday afternoon when the Golden Knights took on St. Michael's College at Fuller Pool.

Reid captured the top spot in the 1-meter dive the first time around for the Golden Knights, scoring 226.40, and later won another 1-meter diving event with a score of 137.80 to help out the Clarkson cause. Reid wasn't the only Clarkson swimmer to win multiple events, as sophomore Gavin Lopata and freshman Benjamin Vondrak won for the men, while Lauren Grasberger won a pair of events on the women's side for the Knights.

Lopata took the top spot for both the 100 and 200 freestyle events, swimming to a first-place finish in the 100 free in 55.64 seconds and hitting the pad first in the 200 freestyle in 2:05.32. Vondrak also won two events, but only one earned Clarkson points. The first-year collegian won the 200 individual medley in 2:21.46, ending the early reign of teammate Jacob Baker in that event when he bested his classmate by .21 seconds. Vondrak also won the 200 breaststroke for the Knights, but with Clarkson well ahead in points, he swam the event as an exhibition. Baker later won the 200 backstroke with a time of 2:20.34 while John Magnuson took first in the 200 butterfly (2:23.42) and Chris Bay won the 50 freestyle (25.09).

On the women's side, Grasberger won a pair of 200 events, taking the individual medley in 2:42.31 and the backstroke in 2:37.14. Classmate Brooke Atkinson won the 200 butterfly in 2:40.09 and junior Kayla Weckesser gained the first-place finish in the 200 breaststroke in 3:00.18.

Clarkson's men also won a pair of relays, but only one picked up points for the Knights as the latter was unnecessary to win and was purely an exhibition. However, the Knights team of Baker, Vondrak, Magnuson and Bay won the 400 medley relay to open the day, finishing first in 4:15.32.
