Reichels help Saints to another split with Bard

Senior Adam Reichel led the St. Lawrence baseball team with three doubles, including two in a 5-4 game one win over Bard on Sunday afternoon, as the Saints and Raptors split their Liberty League doubleheader in Annandale-on-Hudson, N.Y. once again. Bard won the final game of the four-game set 8-0.

Reichel also recorded two RBI in the Saints win, while first-year Brendon Frank and junior Isaac Lewis both finished 3-for-3. Devin Robson also had a multi-hit game for St. Lawrence and scored two runs.

On the mound, Evan Reichel (1-1) picked up the win in game one. He allowed four runs on eight hits with four walks and four strikeouts in five and one-third innings. First-year Louis LaCivita earned the save in relief after an inning and two-thirds of scoreless baseball, allowing just two hits. Fellow rookie Caleb Clarke took the loss in game two for the Saints, throwing five innings and allowing five runs on 10 hits with seven strikeouts. Alex Black and Liam Rogers both made appearances in relief, as Black allowed two runs on three hits and Rogers gave up one run on one hit with five strikeouts through the final three innings.

With the split, the Saints improve to 4-5 overall and 2-2 in conference play so far this season. Bard is now 7-9 and also even at .500 against in the Liberty League at 2-2.

Game 1 –

After a scoreless first inning, Bard opened the scoring in the top of the second on an RBI double to right center by Dillion Daine to take a 1-0 lead, the but Saints responded with a run of their own in the bottom of the frame and two more in the third to take the lead.

Robson, who led off the bottom of the second with a double down the right field line, scored the game-tying run after a single by Lewis moved him to third and Anthony Butler hit an RBI ground ball to short on a fielder's choice.

In the bottom of the third, Taylor Digilio and Brendon Frank hit back-to-back singles to put two runners on for Adam Reichel with one out. Reichel notched his second double of the day and picked up two RBI, as both runners came around to score to give the Saints a 3-1 lead.

Bard chipped away in the top of the fourth, when Adam Carafotes scored on a sacrifice bunt to cut the St. Lawrence lead to 3-2. But the Saints answered once again with a pair of runs in the bottom of the fifth.

Frank led off the inning with a single and advanced to third following a walk and a ground-out double play in the next two at bats and came around to score on a wild pitch with Robson at the plate. Singles form Robson and Lewis led to the Saints second run of the inning as they entered the sixth with a 5-2 lead.

Bard scored two runs on three hits in the top of the sixth inning, but stranded the tying run on base as LaCivita slammed the door in relief.

Bard's Kyle Zigner took the loss, as he allowed three runs on nine hits in four innings of work.

Game 2 –

Quinn McInerney scored what served as the game-winning run on a RBI groundout by Matt Lasky in the top of the first inning to give Bard a 1-0 lead.

By the end of the fifth inning the Raptors had extended their lead to 5-0 and they added three more runs in the later frames to push to the eventual 8-0 margin. Four of the Raptors 14 hits in game two went for extra bases. They also stole six in the contest.

Digilio, Frank, Michael LeFevre, Reichel, Lewis and Butler had a hit apiece for St. Lawrence in the loss, while Lewis led the team with two stolen bases.

The Saints had their chances to put runs across, stranding two runners on base in both the fourth and sixth innings, while also leaving them loaded in the bottom of the seventh.

Bard pitchers Frank Ortega and Alex Bunnell held St. Lawrence to just six hits. Ortega got the win after throwing seven and a third scoreless innings and striking out two. Bunnell worked an inning and two-thirds in relief and allowed just one hit.

The Saints will continue their Liberty League schedule with a doubleheader at RPI in Troy, New York on Wednesday, April 5, the makeup date for the postponed games that were supposed to be played on March 25-26. Wednesday's first game is scheduled for 2 p.m.
