ONEONTA, N.Y.—Oneonta State (4-3, 3-0 SUNYAC) shot 50 percent from the floor in the first half en route to a 61-33 victory over the SUNY Potsdam women’s basketball team (3-5, 1-2) Tuesday night. Madison Slagle had 15 points and six rebounds to lead the Red Dragons.

The teams traded buckets at the start of the game. A three-pointer from Bears sophomore Jessica Kouzan at 16:25 cut Oneonta’s lead to 9-7. However the Red Dragons seized control of the game with a 30-7 run over the next 15 minutes as Potsdam struggled from the floor. Oneonta led 41-22 at the break.

Potsdam played better defense in the second half, but the offense continued to stall. The Bears held the Red Dragons to just 20 points in the final period, but weren’t able to gain ground with just 11 of their own.

Potsdam shot just 26 percent for the game, while Oneonta finished at 40 percent. The Red Dragons forced 24 Bears turnovers and had 16 giveaways of their own. Junior guard Katy Briedis led Potsdam with seven points and sophomore guard Hannah Kmiecinski finished with six points.

“They were hitting everything in the first half and we couldn’t get stops,” said Bears Head Coach Tara Ruckh. “We had some great looks, but we were ice cold. We played better defense in the second half, but we had too many turnovers. We have a lot of mistakes to correct and we need to be more consistent.”

Potsdam is back in action on Friday, Dec. 9, when the Bears host Brockport at 6 p.m.
