POTSDAM -- SUNY Cortland (1-7, 1-4 ECAC West) scored six unanswered goals, including three on the power play, to down the SUNY Potsdam women’s hockey team (1-7, 1-5) 6-1 at Cheel Arena on Saturday night.

Freshman forward Maggie Corbett (Queensbury, N.Y./Queensbury) scored two goals and recorded an assist for the Red Dragons, while senior forward Chelsey Wright (Medford, N.Y./Suffolk PAL) added four assists to lead all scorers.

The Bears got on the board first as sophomore forward Izzy Fayerman (Calgary, Alberta/The Edge) wristed a high shot over the shoulder of Cortland freshman goalie Deanna Meunier (Parsippany, N.J./New Jersey Rockets).

Junior forward Amanda Lucky (Kanata, Ontario/Clarkson University) assisted on the play. Potsdam‘s lead lasted just over two minutes.

Freshman forward Niamh O’Connor (Paramus, N.J./New Jersey Rockets) tipped a shot past Bears senior goalie Jen Conophy (Glenmont, N.Y./Albany Ice Cats) to knot the score at one.

Potsdam outshot Cortland 11-4 in the first period, but the teams headed into the locker room tied.

Five minutes into the second period senior forward Maggie Giamo (Orchard Park, N.Y./RIT) found the corner of the Bears’ net with a high wrist shot to give the Red Dragons a 2-1 advantage on the power play.

At the 11:49 mark, Corbett slammed home a loose puck in Potsdam’s crease for another power-play marker and a 3-1 lead. The Bears called time out after the goal.

The break temporarily halted the Red Dragon’s momentum, but Potsdam was unable to close the gap and trailed by two at the second break. Cortland put the game away in with three goals in the final period. Corbett fired a shot that glanced off the elbow of Conophy and trickled into the net at 4:35.

Junior goalie Dawna Salvarinas (Mississauga, Ontario/Brampton Thunder) replaced Conophy after the goal and was greeted rudely. Two minutes later senior forward Brianna Rossi (Stormville, N.Y./Brewster Bulldogs) scored the Red Dragon’s third and final power-play goal. At 13:58, freshman defenseman Madison Fischl (Basking Ridge, N.J./New Jersey Rockets) blasted a shot from the point, that beat a screened Salvarinas to close the scoring at 6-1.

Meunier made 30 saves to earn the victory. Conophy made eight saves and allowed four goals in the first 44:35 and Salvarinas finished with three saves and two goals allowed in the final 15:25. Cortland was 3-6 on the power play and Potsdam was 0-3.

The Bears outshot the Red Dragons 31-17.

The Potsdam gets another shot at Cortland tomorrow afternoon at 2 p.m.
