ONEONTA, N.Y.—SUNY Oneonta (3-2) pulled away from the SUNY Potsdam women's basketball team (1-4) for a 73-34 victory on Friday night. Senior forward Katie LaVoie (Malone, N.Y./Franklin Academy) led the Bears with 14 points and seven rebounds and Cara Adams paced the Red Dragons with a game-high 15.
Potsdam kept the contest tight through one quarter of play, trailing just 13-11 after 10 minutes. Oneonta extended its lead to 31-19 at the half. However, hot shooting, including 50-percent from 3-point range, allowed the Red Dragons to outdistance the Bears over the final two quarters.
Junior guard Laura Coleman (Manhattan, N.Y./Opportunity Charter) had a strong night for Potsdam with seven points and five rebounds. Freshman guard Janay Smith (Bronx, N.Y./Wings Academy) had three points, four assists and two steals. Lyteshia Price had 13 points and a contest-best seven boards for Oneonta and Teresa Anken chipped in 12 points and four assists.
In addition to 11-for-22 shooting from behind the arc, Oneonta hit 41-percent of its field goals overall and 70-percent of its free throws. The Red Dragons also finished with a 42-35 edge in rebounds.
Potsdam looks to bounce back tomorrow afternoon when the Bears head to New Paltz for a 2 p.m. matchup with the Hawks.
