Red Dragons hold off Bears women's basketball on Senior Day

POTSDAM, N.Y.-- The SUNY Potsdam women's basketball (8-14, 5-11 SUNYAC) fell to SUNY Cortland (12-10, 8-7 SUNYAC) 62-52 on Saturday afternoon. After a cold first half, the Bears could not rally past the Red Dragons. Sophomore center Naya Walters (Bronx, N.Y./Women's Academy of Excellence) had a team-high 16 points and 10 rebounds for a double-double. Senior forward Justice Crespo (Monroe/Monroe-Woodbury) led Cortland with 16 points and seven rebounds.

The Red Dragons started the game on a 9-0 run. Four different players scored for Cortland during the span. Senior guard Abbey Smith (Bainbridge, N.Y./Bainbridge-Guilford) ended the run with a three with 6:06 left in the first. Throughout the quarter freshman guard Dyamon Hunter (Bronx, N.Y./Thurgood Marshall Academy) and Smith each hit a three and got the Bears within five, with 3:49 left. Cortland ended the quarter on a 7-1 push and went into the second with a 21-10 lead.

The Red Dragons kept the pressure going in the second with 12-3 run. Senior forward Shana Crespo (Monroe/Monroe-Woodbury) had six points during the run. The stretch came to a halt after a 3-pointer made by sophomore guard Carly Shear (Newark, N.Y./Newark) with 3:34 until halftime. Freshman forward Devyn Elliott (Bronx, N.Y./Cardinal Spellman) made the final field goal of the half with 2:01 left, and cut the deficit for the Bears 34-18.

Potsdam started the third with an 8-1 stretch for the first four minutes. Hunter had two shots beyond the arc and senior guard Riley Luckie (Ogdensburg, N.Y./Ogdensburg) made a layup. Following junior forward's Katie Carey (Greene/Greene) one-for-two from the line appearance, Walters made a layup with 1:09 left in the third to bring the Bears within four. The Red Dragons scored the last four points of the quarter and went into the fourth up 45-37.

The entire fourth quarter was back and forth play. Potsdam was able to stop Cortland from making shots, however Potsdam got into foul trouble and gave Cortland opportunities to score from the charity stripe. With time winding down the Bears could not get one more run going and lost to the Red Dragons 62-52.

Hunter finished with 14 points and Smith had nine points and three assists. Shear added on eight points.

Sophomore guard Shannon McGuire (West Babylon/West Babylon) ended with 12 points and five assists. Senior guard Kristy Vitucci (Deer Park/Deer Park) had 10 points and five rebounds.

Cortland shot 38 percent from the field, while Potsdam shot 35.1 percent. Both teams recorded 38 rebounds.

Prior to the game, the Bears honored seniors Luckie, Smith, Leah Giavotto (Beacon, N.Y./Beacon), Danielle Pound (Henderson, N.Y./Immaculate Heart) and Victoria Shopovick (White Plains, N.Y./Maria Regina) for Senior Day.

Potsdam is back in action Friday as they travel to New Paltz to take on the Hawks at 5:30 p.m.
