POTSDAM -- SUNY Cortland (7-2-2, 4-0 SUNYAC) scored its lone goal in 50th minute and went on to a 1-0 victory over the SUNY Potsdam women’s soccer team (2-8, 0-3) on Saturday afternoon.
Freshman Jaime Durant (Loudonville, N.Y./Shaker) had another standout day in goal for the Bears, finishing with 13 saves.
Potsdam’s defense and Durant were the stories of the day for the Bears, as they stood toe-to-toe with the Red Dragons from the outset.
Cortland’s offense worked for everything it got and didn’t get it’s first strong scoring chance until 10 minutes left in the first half.
Senior defender Kelly Wanser (East Northport, N.Y./Northport) sent a cross into the box and sophomore forward Rachel Parker (Marathon, N.Y/Marathon) drove it toward the net. Durant stopped the blast and corralled the ball.
Cortland didn’t threaten again in the first half. The Red Dragons finally found a seam in Potsdam’s defense at 49:23.
Sophomore forward Amanda Margolis (Oceanside, N.Y./Oceanside) found senior defender Jenn Fox (New Hyde Park, N.Y./New Hyde Park) all alone in the box and the defender buried the cross.
Cortland continued to pin Potsdam in its own half for most of remaining contest, but couldn’t solve Durant again, who came up with several more diving stops.
In goal, Cortland sophomore goalie Taylor Hudson (Victor, N.Y./Victor) recorded one save for her fourth shutout of the season.
While he’s still looking for an offensive spark, Bears Head Coach Mark Misiak was very pleased with the way his defense handled Red Dragon pressure.
“We played very well defensively,” said Misiak. “Hopefully this will give the girls more confidence and show them that we when we play that way, we are capable of giving anyone problems. This was by far our best 90-minute performance and our effort was, as always, exemplary. I thank the girls for all the work they put in last week to prepare for the weekend.”
Potsdam is back in action Wednesday, Oct. 3, when the Bears head across town to face Clarkson University at 7 p.m.
