CANTON -- SUNY Oneonta junior forward Kelcy Forbragd scored one goal and assisted on another as the Red Dragons edged St. Lawrence University 2-0 in the 2013 field hockey opener for both teams at SLU's Leet/Hall Stadium Saturday afternoon.
Oneonta scored the only goal of a tight first half with exactly two minutes left on the clock prior to intermission as the Red Dragons converted after a penalty corner. Hannah Hayward sent a pass to Forbragd who was to her left and Forbragd snapped a shot between Saint goalie Nicole Matos and the near post for the game's first goal.
The Saints had some chances in the first half and trailed just 10-8 in shots, but the Red Dragons came out firing in the second half and outshot the Saints 9-1 in the first 12 minutes of the second period. Matos, who finished with 14 saves, and a young Saint defense kept the Dragons from adding to their lead until just 2:27 remained in regulation time when Forbragd again had a hand in the scoring.
Andrea Day worked the ball in from the right side and got it to Forbragd, who sent a pass across the goal mouth which Anna Torri tapped home with Matos caught at the opposite post to make it a 2-0 game at 67:33.
The Saints, outshot 26-15 overall, did muster some late offense in the second half, but Krista Servedio stopped all six Saint shots on goal for her first shutout of the year. The Saints were led offensively by junior Ali Ferenczy, who had three shots on goal while rookie defender Maggie Whelley had a defensive save for the Saints as one of three first-year starters on defense for SLU.
Oneonta, 1-0, will play Cedar Crest College, which lost 8-1 to Utica College at Hall/Leet Stadium in game one of the Fall Field Hockey Fest with the teams meeting at 11 a.m. on Sunday. The Saints and 1-0 Utica will play at 1:30.
