CORTLAND, N.Y.—SUNY Cortland (8-2-1, 3-0-1 SUNYAC) scored in the first and 90th minutes against the SUNY Potsdam men's soccer team (6-5-1, 1-2) and the goals proved to be the difference as the Red Dragons captured the 3-1 victory. Junior forward Ben Firlit (South Glens Falls, N.Y./South Glens Falls) scored for the Bears.

The Red Dragons were awarded a free kick under a minute into the contest and made the most of it. Fifty-one seconds in, Darren McCormack launched the kick into the upper left corner of the net from 28 yards out. The play evened out after the goal, but Potsdam wasn't able to close the gap. At the 26-minute mark, Red Dragon Ole Toepfer ripped a loose ball from 20 yards out into the lower right corner of the net to make it 2-0. The score remained the same at the break.

Play was even through most of the second half with Cortland holding onto its two-goal advantage. Scoring opportunities were few until the 83rd minute. At 82:33, Bears junior midfielder Tom Benedetto (Queensbury, N.Y./Queensbury) found Firlit at the left side of the box. He dribbled the ball in and buried for his team-leading sixth tally of the season. Cortland's Daniel Friend hit the goal post two minutes later, but it was Red Dragon Daniel Tesoro that sealed the victory with a goal with just 57 seconds remaining.

Potsdam sophomore goalie Nick Davies (Webster, N.Y./Webster Thomas) made six stops in the game and Cortland keeper Tim Beauvais matched him for the win.

The Red Dragons outshot the Bears 22-16, but Potsdam finished with a 6-5 advantage in in corner kicks.

The Bears are back in action next Friday when they host SUNY Oneonta at 4 p.m.
