Plattsburgh, NY - Junior Ryan Recchia (Latham, NY) took 11th place among collegiate runners and Victoria Hathaway (Stillwater, NY) came in ninth in the women's race as the Clarkson University Cross Country team faced stiff competition at the 33rd annual Cardinal Classic held on the campus of Plattsburgh State at Rugar Woods.

The men's team came in third place among four teams with 84 points, trailing 25th-ranked St. Lawrence (15 points), 30th-ranked Rensselaer (68 points), and finishing just ahead of the host Plattsburgh (86 points). On the women's side, Clarkson was fourth among five squads with 96 tallies, behind 20th-ranked St. Lawrence (15 points), Rensselaer (57), Plattsburgh (81) and well ahead of Paul Smith's (155).

After taking the first weekend of the season off from competition, Recchia showed little rust from his breakout performance for Clarkson last year, taking 11th among the 71 scoring collegiate runners in the race (79 total, but eight were Plattsburgh alumni). Recchia finished the 5,000-meter race in 16 minutes, 14 seconds, an average of 5:14 per mile. Freshman Matt Danosky (Attleboro, MA) crossed the finish line five spots later in 16th with a time of 16:35, and classmate AJ Beers (Central Square, NY) took 24th in 16:51. Senior Ryan Ash (Glens Falls, NY) came in 27th in 17:00 and junior Jacob Dowman (Essex, VT) rounded out the Clarkson scoring with a 29th-place finish in 17:03.

On the women's side, Hathaway backed up her Clarkson debut with a ninth-place finish out of 74 collegiate runners (75 total) in the 5,000-meter race, completing the event in 19:29, a 6:17 mile. Senior Sarah Governale (Wading River, NY) came in 17th in 20:09, while freshman Tara Seigle (Poland, NY) was 24th with a time of 20:28. Junior Lindsey McCormick (Gouvneruer, NY) came in 34th in 21:12 and classmate Chelsea Farinacci (Huntington, NY) completed the Clarkson scoring by coming in 44th in 21:34.
