St. Lawrence University's men's golf team fell three shots short of making the championship match play round at the Liberty League medal play Championship Qualifier hosted by Clarkson at the Potsdam Country Club Saturday and Sunday.
The top four teams in the seven-team field advance to a spring match play round with the winner of that tournament earning the league's automatic berth to the NCAA Division III championships. The Saints finished fifth in the medal play tournament with a best-of-four team score of 625 over the two days of competition, two strokes behind host Clarkson, which nailed down the fourth spot with a 623 total.
Perennial league champion Skidmore had four golfers in the top seven and won the medal qualifier with a 583 total while RPI had three in the top ten and was second at 596. Rochester finished third with a 616 total. Hobart was sixth and the US Merchant Marine Academy was seventh.
John McCarthy of Skidmore shot a course record 67 on Sunday and was the only player to break par on the 6573 yard par 72 course with a two-round total of 171. Teammate Garrett Colgan was even par with rounds of 71-73-144.
Freshman Jack Reardon led the Saints with a tie for 15th, shooting 77-79 for a 155 total. Jeff Duggan tied for 19th with rounds of 80 and 76 and a 156 total while John Harris tied for 22nd at 78-80-158, Ren O'Connor was 25th at 85-75-160 and Brandon Lustig shot 81-86-167 and was 28th.
Mike Phelan and Brady Garrett played as individuals for the Saints with Phelan shooting 83-85-168 to finish 29th and Garrett 88-81 for a 169 total and a tie for 30th in the 41-player field.
The Saints will play in the ECAC Championships at Blue Heron in Rochester Saturday and Sunday.
