AKWESASNE -- It was too good to last.
Mohawk International Raceway (MIR) had managed to get the first nine races of the season into the record books and while rain played a factor in two events, the main features were completed on each night.
Friday night, heavy rain showers and thunderstorms swept through the Seaway Valley and MIR was forced to accept its first washout of the 2010 season on Burke's Excavation and Buck's Supply night.
The rainout puts everyone's attention on next Friday night, July 16, as the DIRTcar Pro Stock division will be featured.
Aaron's Sales and Leasing presents the Mohawk Race Parts Pro Stock tour, with the Pro Stocks slated to run a 50-lap feature event.
Also on the card will be a full program of racing for the Frenchie's Chevrolet DIRTcar 358 Modifieds, the DIRTcar Sportsman and the Bandits. The green flag flies at 7:45 p.m.
Going into the Aaron's Sales and Leasing Pro Stock 50, the Pro Stocks have clearly been the most competitive of the four weekly divisions at MIR. There have been three different feature winners, with Ricky Thompson capturing his third feature win of the season last Friday night.
The win also moved Thompson into the lead in the Pro Stock point standings. Louie "Action" Jackson has three wins while Dave "Bulldog" Bissonnette has a pair of feature wins.
But what sets the Pro Stocks apart is how many competitive cars are in the division. On a given night, nearly 15 different Pro Stocks stand a reasonable chance at winning, with two and three-wide racing the norm -- several features have been decided with last-lap passes.
The Pro Stocks are known for running in tight packs where just one mistake can cost a driver several positions...or lead to disaster.
The list of MIR contenders still shut out of victory lane is lengthy: Billy Woodward Jr. is coming off several recent strong runs, as is the ever-improving Rod Tarbell.
After missing the first few weeks of the season, Alexandria, ONT's Roch Aubin has returned with a vengeance, finishing second last week, while Cornwall, ONT's Corey Wheeler has posted a string of top five finishes this year.
Dion Oakes is quietly having a very consistent season, sitting fourth in points and establishing a reputation for sneaking up through the field in the closing laps to post a top finish as the checkered flag flies.
Pro Stock 2008 champion Stephane LeBrun has had several good runs and sits fifth in points despite missing a couple of events. Pro Stock veterans Jody Swamp, Allen Peters and PJ Peters have been strong all year but are still looking for the combination to put them into victory lane, while youngsters Harvey Arquette Jr. and Dave Papineau have both been within a car length of grabbing their first wins of the season.
An outstanding field of invaders is expected for this event, with Alexandria, ONT's Joey Ladouceur (who finished third in his only MIR start last week) leading the charge -- Ladouceur is always competitive wherever he goes and he won the opening event of the Mohawk Race Parts series at Cornwall.
Several Pro Stock teams from Cornwall and the tough Quebec circuit are expected to be on hand for this event.
The prestigious Mohawk Race Parts Pro Stock series is a regional series for local Pro Stock racers, with events at Mohawk International Raceway, Cornwall Speedway, Autodrome Granby and Autodrome Drummond.
This race will be just the second race in the series.
Mohawk International Raceway is midway between the Seaway International Bridge to Cornwall, Ont. and the Akwesasne Mohawk Casino. From Route 37, turn south onto Frogtown Road.
Racing is held on Friday nights at 7:45 p.m. from May through September, featuring the Frenchie's Chevrolet DIRTcar 358 Modifieds, Sportsman and Pro Stocks, as well as the Bandit division.
