Quinnipiac edges Saints men's hockey on late goal

Two third period goals from visiting Quinnipiac, including one with 1:24 remaining, helped the Bobcats to edge the St. Lawrence men's hockey team 3-2 on Friday night in Appleton Arena.

Michael Laidley and Ryan Garvey led St. Lawrence with a goal each against the Bobcats, while netminder Arthur Brey made 32 saves between the pipes. Jake Stevens finished the night with a pair of assists and senior Ryan Lough finished with a team-high four shots on goal.

After Nick Jermain gave Quinnipiac the lead just 2:19 into the game, the Saints upped the intensity and put consistent pressure on the Bobcats in the first period. Finally, at the 16:57 mark, an Appleton bounce helped get them on the board.

With the Saints in transition, Jake Stevens sent a hard dump into the Quinnipiac zone that hit the dasher on the end boards, to the right of Shortridge in net and skipped back off the near post and into Laidley's skates as he crashed through the slot. The Little Current, Ontario native got the puck to his stick and backhanded a shot behind Shortridge to tie the game at 1-1 with his second of the year.

Early in the second period, Garvey notched his second of the year as well when he buried a rebound from the hashmarks at 5:13 to give St. Lawrence a 2-1 lead. Stevens and Mike Marnell assisted on the play, with Marnell moving into a tie with Jacob Pritchard with a team-best 19 points on the year.

The Saints carried that 2-1 lead into the final fame and outshot Quinnipiac 10-8 through the last 20 minutes, but were unable to get another past the Bobcats' Andrew Shortridge.

Instead, Quinnipiac took advantage of their fourth power play chance of the game, as Chase Priskie beat Brey with a slapshot from the left circle at the 12:52 mark of the third period to tie the game.

Just over a minute after successfully killing the Saints' fourth power play opportunity, Jermain's shot from the left circle hit a stick in front and trickled through five hole on Brey to help the Bobcats steal the win.

With the loss, the Saints drop to 7-24-2 overall on the year and 3-17-1 in conference play. Meanwhile, Quinnipiac improves to 14-15-4 and 9-10-2 against ECAC Hockey teams. The win was the third consecutive 3-2 victory over the Saints in Appleton Arena for the Bobcats, after taking both the second and third games of last season's ECAC Hockey quarterfinal series by the same margin.

Quinnipiac finished with a 35-30 shot advantage and went 1-for-4 on the power play, while the Saints finished 0-for-4.

St. Lawrence will play its final home game of the season on Saturday night against Princeton with puck drop set for 7 p.m. The Saints will honor the six members of the Class of 2018 in a postgame ceremony.
