Potsdam Bears hockey teams begin postseason this week

POTSDAM, N.Y.—The SUNY Potsdam men’s and women’s hockey teams are back in the playoffs this week. The Bears men travel to Buffalo State for a 7 p.m. matchup on Wednesday, Feb. 22. The women head to Elmira for a 3 p.m. showdown on Saturday, Feb. 25.

The men finished the regular season with an 8-15-2 overall record, 6-10-0 in the SUNYAC. The Bears are led by senior captain Sy Nutkevitch, who led the SUNYAC in scoring and tied for eighth in the nation with 38 points (8 goals- 30 assists). He also led the conference in assists and finished second in the country in assists-per-game (1.20). Trevor Cope also had a strong freshman campaign. The forward finished second on the team in scoring with eight goals and 17 assists for 25 points. Cope led the conference in scoring by a rookie and finished the regular season fifth in the nation. Sophomore forward Adam Place also had a career year with 10 goals and 11 assists for 21 points.

The women posted a 9-3-2 record to close the regular season with to finish 11-9-3 overall and 7-8-3 in the ECAC West. The Bears’ 11 wins set a new program record. Senior captain Annmarie Lewis led Potsdam with 17 goals and 14 assists for 31 points. Lewis’ scoring average of 1.41 points-per-game was good for seventh in the conference and 10th in the nation. She ranked fourth in the ECAC West in goals. Senior defenseman Breanna Roy had another strong campaign with eight goals and 20 assists for 28 points. Roy was fifth in the conference and 10th in the nation with an average of 0.87 assists-per-game. She was also second in the conference and fourth in the nation in scoring by a defenseman with 1.22 points-per-game. Sophomore forward Jessica Silveira had a breakout season for Potsdam with 14 goals and nine assists for 23 points. Silveira ranked seventh in the ECAC West in goals-per-game and 13th in the conference in overall scoring.

Tickets for Wednesday's men’s game will be available at the door at the Buffalo State Ice Arena for $5 for the public and $2 for students.

Tickets for the women’s game will go on sale on Saturday at 1:00 p.m at Elmira’s Murray Athletic Center. Ticket Prices are $5 for adults and $3 for children.
