Pritchard scores two as Saints men's hockey and Union tie

Freshman Jacob Pritchard scored a pair of goals and goaltender Kyle Hayton had another big night with 34 saves as St. Lawrence and Union played to a 3-3 ECAC Hockey tie at Messa Rink in Schenectady Saturday night.

St. Lawrence, now 14-11-3 overall and 8-6-2 in league play move into a three-way tie for fourth in the ECAC standings with RPI and Dartmouth after their three-pointThe Saints celebrate Jacob Pritchard's first goal at Union weekend while Union is now 10-10-8 on the season and 3-8-4 in league play.

The Saints survived some special teams troubles and came from a goal down in the third period to forge the tie and received a big night from junior defenseman Gavin Bayreuther, who had a pair of assists and several big defensive plays along the way. Union went two for four on the power play and while the Saints scored on their first power play of the game, they came up empty on five others including 1:08 of five on three in the second period.

"Union always plays us very tough in this building," said Saint coach Greg Carvel. "We haven't won here yet since I have been coaching, so it was a small victory tonight to get a tie on a comeback in the third period."

Union came out strong to start the game, but the Saints scored the first goal on their first shot of the game as Bayreuther fed Pritchard who circled in front and beat Union goalie Alex Sakellaropolous with a wrist shot to the upper corner at 7:22.

Union tied it just under three minutes later when the puck popped out in front of Hayton and was tapped back in by Michael Pontarelli at 10:03, but the Saints regained the lead when Ryan Lough drove hard to the net and left a drop pass for Mike Laidley who tucked it inside the post for his third of the year at 11:51.

The Dutchmen, who had beaten the Saints six straight times at Messa Rink, tied it at 2-2 on a power play at 9:21 of the second period as Brett Supinski tucked his seventh of the year in at the side of the net after the Saints couldn't clear the zone, and Union went ahead on another power play goal as Matt Wilkins scored just seven seconds into the third Union power play of the night at 4:35 of the third.

Pritchard tied it for the Saints at 13:13 of the third as he collected his own rebound and put it inside the post with Drew Smolcynski and Ward assisting and it stayed tied the rest of the way despite some good scoring chances at either end.

Hayton's 34 save night included four saves in overtime and a breakaway save and a penalty shot save in the final four minutes of the second period. Sakellaropoulos finished with 32 saves for the Dutchmen.

"They were hungrier around the net than we were tonight. We were missing a little kick with Sullivan and McGovern out of the lineup due to injuries…it took a little bit out of our lineup and I didn't think we had the edge that we did at RPI. In this league every point is huge and to come back and get a tie in the third period is not a bad result," Carvel added.
