Canton, NY – The SUNY Canton women's hockey team went 2-for-6 on the power play on Friday afternoon as both of their goals came with the extra skater in a 3-2 loss to visiting Morrisville State College in Colonial Hockey Conference action at the Roos House.

The trio of Noelle Niemiec (Staten Island, NY), Tess Adams (Calgary, AB) and Jessica Pele (Estevan, SK) combined for six points en route to scoring both Roos goals in the contest.

Neither team could find the back of the net in the opening period as the Roos (2-4-0, 2-1-0 CHC) spent a lot of their time killing off penalties as the PK proved strong not allowing a goal as they went 4-for-4.

The visitors got on the board first at 4:17 of the second when Stephanie Strymecki took a shot from the point that was redirected in front of goal by Kelley Graham for her third tally of the season. Just less than three minutes later Pele lit the lamp for the second time this season. She skated in from the blue line and rifled a shot top shelf. Niemiec and Adams earned helpers on the power play goal.

The Mustangs regained the lead just 41 seconds later when Graham scored her second of the night as she slipped the puck between the five-hole of Rebecca DiNardo (Ottawa, ON). Strymecki earned an assist on the play. Exactly three minutes later Morrisville extended its lead to 3-1 as Kanekaroroks McComber slotted her first of the season off a pass from Bailey Dillabough.

The Roos made the skater advantage pay off once again with just more than three minutes to play in the middle period. Pele skated along the near boards and found Niemiec at the point who fired a shot toward the front of net. Adams stood out in front shielding Mustang goaltender Renee Schmaltz. Adams was able to redirect the puck home past the pads of Schmaltz on a beautiful play. Morrisville took a 3-2 lead into intermission.

With eight minutes remaining DiNardo made a huge save on a Mustang breakaway to keep it 3-2. Just 30 seconds later Kat McNeilly (Scarborough, ON) rung a shot off the pie and Pele had a great chance on the rebound but Schmaltz sprawled out making an incredible diving save to keep Morrisville on top.

With 57 seconds remaining and still trailing one the Roos pulled the goalie. Both Pele and McNeilly had shots with just less than a minute remaining but Schmaltz made both stops. SUNY Canton called timeout with 57 second remaining to regroup. The Roos made a late push but Morrisville was able to hang on for the 3-2 victory.

DiNardo was a fortress in net making 38 saves in the contest, while Schmaltz was also effective for the Mustangs turning aside 30 shots. The Roos outplayed Morrisville in special teams going 2-for-6 on the power play while killing all five of its penalties.

These two teams will have a rematch on Saturday at 1 p.m. at the Roos House.
