HAMBURG -- Senior Jerry Coleman (Potsdam, NY) scored a team-high 27 points in his second collegiate game, but the Clarkson University Men's Basketball team lost an eight-point lead in the final minute thanks to a streaky Utica College shooter and fell 82-79 in the opening game of the Hilbert Tip-Off Tournament.

The Golden Knights, 1-1 overall, will play in the consolation game on Saturday.

Though Clarkson trailed for most of the first half, Jerry Coleman tossed in 17 first-half points to keep Clarkson in it, helping the Knights take the lead late in the half on a jumper. Clarkson held the lead for most of the second half, and led by as many as nine points with three minutes remaining, 75-66. The Knights maintained their advantage into the final minute after a free throw from Felix Llanos (Queens, NY) gave them a 79-71 edge with 46 seconds to go. However, Matt Baldwin continued his hot shooting by scoring the final 11 points of the game, including a 3-pointer, a lay up, and six free throws, with three coming on a foul off a 3-point field goal. Meanwhile, Clarkson couldn't convert on any of its chances, including several free throw chances.

Coleman scored 27 points on 9-for-20 shooting, including 5-for-11 from beyond the 3-point arc. Freshman John Coleman (Potsdam, NY) recorded his second straight double-double with 11 points and 12 rebounds, including eight on the offensive end, and added in four steals. Llanos nearly produced a double-double of his own with 19 points, nine rebounds, and six assists, and Marques Charlton (Deer Park, NY) followed suit with 15 points and eight rebounds.

Coleman's 27 points were the most by a first-year player for Clarkson since Nick Jones tossed in 32 points against Hamilton College in January 2004.

Matt Baldwin scored a game-high 28 points in 21 minutes off the bench, shooting 8-for-12 from the field, 6-for-10 from the 3-point line, and 6-for-7 from the free throw line. Aaron Nevins added in 14 points and six rebounds for the Pioneers, and George Schultz contributed 10 points on 5-for-9 shooting for Utica.
