Potsdam women's basketball falls short against SUNY Poly, 62-59

CANTON, N.Y.- The SUNY Potsdam women's basketball team (1-2) fell short against SUNY Poly (2-0) Saturday afternoon with a score of 62-59 on day two of the Kevin Fee Roos Classic at SUNY Canton. Junior guard Riley Luckie (Ogdensburg, N.Y./Ogdensburg) led the Bears for the third straight game with 28 points. Kiersten Leos scored 17 points and had five steals, six rebounds and five assists to help in the Wildcats win.

The teams went basket-for-basket throughout the first quarter with SUNY Poly holding the slight 16-15 advantage. Freshman forward Nicole Hansen (Fulton, N.Y./G. Ray Bodley) recorded four points in the 10-minute span with Paige Gallo scoring five for the Wildcats.

SUNY Poly scored five at the start of the second, but the Bears rallied by going on a 6-0 run to tie the game at 21. The Wildcats answered with their own run of 14-2 with Leos leading the way with six points. SUNY Poly led Potsdam 35-25 heading into halftime.

Luckie's offense got going for the Bears in the third by scoring 14 total points and going 4-for-6 from behind the arch. Hansen contributed a layup and junior captain Abbey Smith (Bainbridge, N.Y./Bainbridge-Guilford) went 1-for-2 from the free throw line for Potsdam's 17 points. The Wildcats added 13 to their total and held on to a six-point lead going into the final quarter.

A fast-break layup by Smith ignited Potsdam for a 9-3 run to tie the contest at 51 with 7:25 to go. SUNY Poly answered with a 7-0 run, but following a technical foul on the Wildcats the Bears were awarded four foul shots of their own. Sophomore guard Drew Dufrane (Liverpool, N.Y./Liverpool) went 3-for-4 then a layup from freshman guard Alexis Davis (Brooklyn, N.Y./Williamsburg H.S. Architecture & Design) got the Bears within two. Smith tied the contest once again at the free throw line, at 59 apiece with 1:33 to go. SUNY Poly finished the game by going 3-for-4 from the foul line to close out the 62-59 victory.

Smith, Hansen and Dufrane each finished with six points, while Smith and Hansen each grabbed eight rebounds for game-highs. Smith also tacked on seven assists for a career-high.

Khristaijah Jackson recorded 13 points with six rebounds and Rylie Smith added 12 points and five rebounds. Gallo rounded out the leaders with 11 points, three steals and another five boards.

Potsdam's next contest will be with cross-town rival Clarkson University on Tuesday, Nov. 28th at 6 p.m. following Thanksgiving break.
