Potsdam women's basketball falls to Buffalo State in SUNYAC opener

POTSDAM, N.Y.- A strong fourth quarter from Buffalo State (3-3, 1-0 SUNYAC) lifted the Bengals over the SUNY Potsdam women's basketball team (1-4, 0-1 SUNYAC) 71-47 Friday night at Jerry Welsh Gymnasium. Freshman guard Mikayla Horton (Hammond, N.Y./Hammond) had a career-high 10 points and grabbed six rebounds to lead the Bears. Freshman forward Lex Williams (Brooklyn, N.Y./South Shore) fell short of a double-double with 14 points and eight boards for Buffalo State.

Potsdam and Buffalo State exchanged baskets throughout the first quarter. With 1:50 to go, junior guard Riley Luckie (Ogdensburg, N.Y./Jefferson C.C.) tied the contest at 11 with a free throw and the Bears went on a mini 6-0 run. Luckie and Horton each hit a three and got the Bears out to a six-point lead at the end of the quarter.

The Bengals answered during the next 10-minute span by outscoring Potsdam 14-7. Rosario completed two 3-point plays, while junior guard Grace Licata (Williamsville, N.Y./Williamsville South) and freshman guard Kendall Mills (Buffalo, N.Y./Kenmore East) each hit from behind the arc. Freshman forward Hannah Marcellus (Potsdam, N.Y./Madrid-Waddington) and junior captain Abbey Smith (Bainbridge, N.Y./Bainbridge-Guilford) each recorded two points and Luckie added a 3-pointer for the Bears. Buffalo State held a one point lead going into the break.

Rosario started the scoring the same way she started it in the second, with another 3-point play and Marcellus answered with a layup for the Bears. Following the layup, the Bengals ignited for an 11-0 run to jump out to an 11 point lead that carried over into the final 10 minutes.

Buffalo State's offense took off in the fourth by scoring 30 points. Eight different Bengals recorded points in the effort. Potsdam scored 17 to tie their total in the first with freshmen guards Mia Jackson () and Alexis Davis (Brooklyn, N.Y./Williamsburg H. S. Architecture) each hit four from the free throw line. Freshman center Naya Walters (Bronx, N.Y./Women's Academy of Excellence) hit two layups, while Horton knocked down another three. Buffalo State took the 71-47 victory.

Davis finished with eight points and four rebounds, while Luckie tallied seven points. Marcellus and freshman forward Nicole Hansen (Fulton, N.Y./G. Ray Bodley) each recorded six boards for Potsdam.

Rosario recorded 13 points, three blocks and six rebounds. Freshman guard Lay Knight (Brooklyn, N.Y./Brooklyn Prep) led the contest with 10 boards, while freshman guard Katie Villarini (Hamburg, N.Y./Hamburg), sophomore forward Liv LeBaron (Horseheads, N.Y./Corning Painted Post) and sophomore guard Kaelee Lynch (Atwater, Calif./Buhach Colony) each finished with seven points.

The Bears are back at Jerry Welsh Gymnasium tomorrow to host SUNY Fredonia at 1 p.m.
