GENESEO, N.Y.—Geneseo (12-10-1, 6-7-1 SUNYAC) scored four first period goals en route to a 4-3 victory over the SUNY Potsdam men’s hockey team (8-12-2, 6-7-0) in a SUNYAC contest on Friday night.

Danny Scagnelli put the Ice Knights out in front 1-0 with a power-play marker just 5:34 into the contest. Junior forward Bill Tsekos evened the score three minutes later with assists from freshmen forwards Max Fogel and Kenny Simon. That was the last time the game would be tied. At the 13:29 mark, Ryan Bulach put Geneseo on top for good with another goal on the man advantage. Three minutes later Corbin Rosmarin made it 3-1 and Justin Scharfe scored the eventual game-winner at 18:23.

There was no scoring in a physical second period. The Ice Knights were called for three penalties and the Bears two, but neither team was able to capitalize.

Potsdam outplayed Geneseo in the third period. Senior forward Mike Foy made it a 4-2 contest with a power-play goal at 4:20 of the final period. Sophomore forward Mike Arnold and freshman defenseman Erick Ware each recorded assists. Midway through the period, freshman forward Dan McCamey closed the gap to just one on helpers from freshman Vinny Buttitta and senior captain Sy Nutkevitch. The Bears continued to pressure, outshooting Geneseo 14-9 in the third period, and pulled senior goalie Kevin McFarland with 45 seconds to go, but couldn’t break even.

McFarland finished with 24 saves, while Geneseo goalie Cory Gershon turned aside 28 shots for the win. Potsdam was 1-5 on the power play and the Ice Knights finished 2-7.

“You can’t give up four goals in the first period on the road and expect to win,” said Bears Head Coach Chris Bernard. “We knew what the game plan was, but our early execution wasn’t good enough. We did play tremendous second and third periods. We played very hard and threw everything we had at them, but it was just too little too late.”

Potsdam, which currently sits two points in front of Brockport for the final playoff spot, takes on the Golden Eagles tomorrow night at 7 p.m.
