The SUNY Potsdam men's lacrosse team put together a dominant team performance as 11 different players scored including six players with at least two goals in downing SUNY Canton 17-5 in a nonconference game on Tuesday night at Maxcy Turf Field.

It was the teams' first regular season meeting since April 1977.

Sophomore attacker Ed Doherty (Amherst, N.Y. / Amherst), senior attacker Rob Kunz (Watertown, N.Y. / IHC), freshman attacker Joe Hayes (Black River, N.Y. / Carthage), sophomore midfielder Pat Bonafede (Churchville, N.Y. / Churchville-Chili), freshman attacker Berkley Stone (Madison, Conn. / Daniel Hand), and freshman attacker Ryan Conway (Queensbury, N.Y. / Queensbury) all tallied two goals for the Bears.

Potsdam held a robust edge in most phases of the game by earning decisive 51-22 shots advantage, and a plus 17 margin on groundballs (48-31). The Bears committed 12 fewer turnovers than Canton (27-15) and also made good on all 23 of its clears.

The Bears started quickly from the onset. In the opening quarter, five different Potsdam players scored as the Bears outshot the Kangaroos 15-3 and controlled possession for the majority of time.

Doherty scored from Ryan McConnell (Syracuse, N.Y. / West Genesee) at 12:55 in the first quarter. Freshman Matt Moran (Watertown, N.Y. / IHC) followed with a goal from Kunz at 9:07.

From there, Hayes increased the lead when he ripped a goal from Kunz. Bonafede scored from Kunz and Stone got in on the scoring act to make it a 5-0 Potsdam lead with a helper from Bonafede.

The Bears (5-3) didn't let up much in the second quarter as it added four more goals. Bonafede struck in the opening 2:41 of the quarter. Kunz, the Bears' leading scorer, got on the board at 9:41 with a quick whip of his crosse and then added another unassisted goal at 6:22. He finished with five points on the night for a team-leading 26 points.

Junior midfielder Taylor Caswell got the 'Roos on the board at 4:59 in the second quarter when the ball trickled on through after being deflected off Bears goalie Ryan Duffy's foot.

Senior tri-captain Derek Frost (Buffalo, N.Y. / Williamsville East) had a welcomed return to the team after a two-game absence when he scored unassisted at 3:45.

Canton (3-4) was able to start off the third quarter on a positive note by getting the first two scores of the half by freshmen Kyler Wilbur and Cam Carter to cut the deficit to 9-3.

However, the Bears answered back with markers by Doherty, Conway, Hayes and Matt Kennedy to push it to a 10-goal advantage.

In the fourth quarter, Stone fired another goal in the top half of the cage. The Bears received late tallies form Conway, freshman Casey Boulio (Carthage, N.Y. / Carthage) and freshman Michael Roukous (Dexter, N.Y. / General Brown).

The Roos got markers from junior Garrett DiTullio and senior Tanner Pratt.

Potsdam will next host Castleton State on Saturday at 1 p.m. in a nonconference tilt.
