Potsdam knocks off Oswego in men's soccer

The SUNY Potsdam men's soccer team picked up its first State University of New York Athletic Conference victory Saturday, defeating host Oswego 2-0.

One day after a 5-0 defeat at Cortland, the Bears (2-8-1 overall, 1-3 SUNYAC) came out hard in the offensive attack, finally scoring in the 38th minute on a header by junior Chris Mack (South Glens Falls, N.Y.).

Freshman Alex Minsker (Brewster, N.Y.) posted his second assist of the year on the play.

"After yesterday, we didn't really know what the mentality of our guys would be coming out today," Potsdam coach Adam Parker said. "There wasn't really a guy who had a bad game. After the first goal, we looked confident and knew we could win."

Potsdam added an unassisted insurance goal in the 81st minute on a great hustle play by senior Brandon Calandra (Gloversville, N.Y.).

The Bears outshot the Lakers (3-6-1, 1-2), who on Friday knocked off perennial conference favorite Plattsburgh, 8-4 on goal.

"We started out as the aggressor instead of adapting to the way the other team played," Parker said. "We just looked like a really sound team."

Sophomore goalkeeper Joe Glackin (Latham, N.Y.) totaled four saves for his second shutout of the season.

Calandra, senior captain Tim Ciampa (Castleton, N.Y.) and senior Bobby Kane (Glens Falls, N.Y.) recorded two shots on goal apiece.

The Bears resume conference play on Friday, Oct. 8, at home against New Paltz. Match time at Maxcy Hall Turf Field is set for 4 p.m.
