ROCHESTER--The SUNY Potsdam volleyball team rallied in the fourth set and saw a number of players contribute in a 16-25, 25-21, 26-24, 27-25 victory over Nazareth Saturday at the RIT Tournament in Rochester, N.Y.
The Bears (4-9) finished the day with a split after falling in five sets against Geneseo (14-25, 25-16, 25-11, 18-25, 15-9) in the following match.
After falling in the first set, Potsdam was sharp in the next three sets against Nazareth (5-7), which had been unbeaten in tournament play entering the match.
Down 24-20 in the fourth set, the Bears rallied to tie the match at 24-24 and went on to win the frame and close the match.
"I'm extremely happy winning the next three sets after losing the first one, especially considering we were down in the fourth," Potsdam coach Steve Pike said. "Our good serving, defense and blocking got us back into it."
Offensively, the Bears were led by freshman Annie Smith (Burke, N.Y.), who totaled 14 kills, and junior Sam Strader (Watertown, N.Y.) and sophomore Kayla Howard (Marcellus, N.Y.), who finished with six kills apiece.
Senior Erica Romaniello (Selden, N.Y.) and freshman Jenna Blujus(Baldwinsville, N.Y.) posted 14 digs apiece. Blujus also recorded 28 assists and four service aces. Sophomore Anne Fildes (Red Hook, N.Y.) had four blocks and three aces.
Against Geneseo (5-8), Blujus tallied 14 assists, 14 digs and a team-high nine kills. Howard registered eight kills and five blocks, while Strader notched seven kills, 14 digs and two aces. Romaniello, a captain, finished with 16 digs.
"It was a tale of two teams (against Geneseo)," Pike said. "Unforced errors were our downfall. We played hard, but not efficiently.
"Overall, I'm very pleased with our effort, attitude and communication for the day."
Potsdam finished 1-3 at the tournament after falling in three sets on Friday against Rochester and Brockport.
The Bears begin State University of New York Athletic Conference East Division play next Friday and Saturday at New Paltz. The Bears begin play at 5 p.m. against Cortland.
