Potsdam Bears lose home finale, still clinch post-season spot

POTSDAM -- In their final SUNYAC home match of the season, the SUNY Potsdam men’s soccer team fell to Fredonia 1-0.

The Bears (7-6-2, 4-2-1 SUNYAC) still managed to clinch a spot in the SUNYAC Tournament courtesy of Oneonta’s 2-1 win over New Paltz.

The first half of action saw the Blue Devils (11-5, 4-3) strike early.

The game’s only score came 3:05 into the contest. Sophomore Luke Tylutki’s (Pittsford, N.Y./Pittsford-Mendon) shot hit the post but he collected his own rebound and knocked it into the open net.

Fredonia had another scoring opportunity three minutes after that goal but junior keeper Joe Glackin (Latham, N.Y./Shaker) made a diving save to keep the Bears within one.

In the second half, the Bears would have two good chances to tie the game up. In the 56th minute, freshman Eduardo Figueroa sent a shot toward the corner of the net but goalkeeper Bobby McGinnis (Elmira, N.Y./Elmira Free Academy) just got enough of the ball to send it wide.

At the 84:02 mark, freshman Stephen Auyer (Oswego, N.Y./Oswego) saw his shot sail over the outstretched hand of McGinnis but was just over the crossbar. Potsdam would end the game with a 15-11 advantage in shots, but couldn’t find a way to get on the scoreboard.

The Bears are back in action next weekend with two road matches to close out conference play. Potsdam will take on Brockport at 4 p.m. on Friday and then head to Geneseo for a 1 p.m. match on Saturday.
