UTICA, N.Y.—The SUNY Potsdam women's hockey team (6-12-2, 1-11-1 ECAC West) rallied from a 2-0 deficit before falling 4-2 to Utica College (11-5-1, 7-2-1) on Saturday afternoon at the Utica Auditorium. Junior defenseman Kady Hart (Potsdam, N.Y./North Country Ice Storm) and junior forward Amanda Peterson (West Chazy, N.Y./Chazy Flyers) each scored for the Bears, while senior assistant captain Abby Tardelli (Potsdam, N.Y./North Country Ice Storm) made 28 saves.
Gabrielle Schnepp put the Pioneers up 1-0 at 11:24 of the first period. Just 3:24 later, Morgan Reed doubled the score with another even-strength goal. At 16:15, Hart finally got Potsdam on the board with assists from senior captain Sally Mooney (Columbus, Ohio/Wyoming Seminary) and freshman forward Jenna Patterson (Boissevain, Manitoba/Westman Wildcats). Utica took the 2-1 lead into the break.
The Pioneers were whistled for a hooking call 3:33 into the second period and the Bears took advantage. Peterson tied the game on the power play at 5:22. Mooney and junior forward Jordan Ott (Hilton, N.Y./Rochester Edge) each recorded assists on the goal. The tie lasted only 37 seconds as Jane Pagano netted the eventual game-winner at 5:59. The Potsdam outshot Utica in the period, but trailed 3-2 after 40 minutes.
The third period was evenly played, but the Bears couldn't solve Pioneer goalie Keira Goin again. With a minute remaining Tardelli was pulled for an extra attacker. At 19:25, Lauren Patterson sealed the contest with an empty-net goal.
Goin stopped 24 shots for her 10th win of the season. The Bears were 1-for-1 on the power play and didn't allow one to Utica.
Potsdam is now off until they head to Neumann University on Feb. 5, for a two-game series with the Knights.
