Canton, NY – Despite outplaying their opponents the Roos dropped a 1-0 overtime decision to visiting Utica College on Wednesday evening. The Pioneers received tremendous play from their keeper and a goal 3:53 into overtime helped the Pioneers (5-7-3) get past SUNY Canton (9-6-1).

After 90 minutes of scoreless play the Pioneers were able to break through in the sudden death overtime period. Gustaf Petersen played a pass from center to Chris Stashko roughly seven yards out. Stashko was able to beat Roo keeper Patrick Anunziatta (Schenectady, NY) from a tough angle across the face of goal into the right side of the net for the game-winner.

Despite the loss SUNY Canton controlled play throughout owning a 13-6 shots on goal advantage in the contest. The Roos had a great chance with just less than a minute left in the opening half. SUNY Canton worked the ball up the field and Nick Escalante (Whittier, CA) took on multiple defenders finding Hunter Mowery (Elizabethtown, NY). Mowery ripped a shot toward the right corner but Pioneer keeper David Abdou was able to make the save.

The game remained scoreless at intermission as SUNY Canton held a 6-4 shots on goal advantage. The Roos continued to dictate play in the second half as Escalante had another chance but Abdou made a diving save to preserve the scoreless tie.

Early in the 66th minute Devin Gruneisen (Potsdam, NY) placed a header on goal toward the upper left corner but a Utica defender made a great play blocking the shot to save a would-be score. SUNY Canton continued to push but the game remained tied after 90 minutes.

Stashko's game-winning goal was the only shot on target in the extra period. Abdou had a huge day turning aside 13 shots for the Pioneers. Anunziatta made five saves for the Roos. Escalante paced all players with six shots on goal, while Mowery added three.

SUNY Canton honored its three seniors: Abdulai Jagana (Bronx, NY), Jon Forte (Schenectady, NY) and Abdoulie Jawara (Bronx, NY) prior to Wednesday's game.

The men's soccer team will look to get back to their winning ways on Sunday when they travel to take on SUNY Cortland at 1 p.m.
