GENESEO, N.Y.- Junior Curtis Pierce scored his 1,000th career point in a difficult 74-51 loss to Geneseo. Pierce’s historic basket came at the 9:40 mark of the second half on a jumper and he finished the game with a team-high 13 points.

Geneseo (12-12, 10-7 SUNYAC) shot a scorching 65 percent (13-of-20) in the first half and took a 40-26 lead going into halftime. The Blue Knights also had a decided advantage at the free throw line, going 13-for-17 while the Bears only attempted seven shots from the charity stripe. Jordan Jones had 10 points in the half and was matched by 10 from sophomore Rob Duquette who also had seven rebounds. Pierce had seven at the break, leaving him three shy of 1,000.

Geneseo continued their hot shooting in the second half and held a 65-40 lead before Pierce etched his name in the record books. Potsdam Head Coach Sherry Dobbs immediately called a timeout to make sure Pierce could be honored for the achievement. Pierce has been remarkably consistent and averaged exactly 13.9 points as a freshman and sophomore. He scored 334 points in his first season with the Bears and followed that with 362 the following year. Despite being plagued by ankle and toe problems that forced him to miss two contests, he has 307 points this year.

For the game, the Knights shot 66.7 percent from the field and forced the Bears into 18 turnovers. They were led by 18 points from Connor Fedge and 14 from Ryan Riefenhauser.

Potsdam (5-19, 3-14) finished 36.4 percent from the field and only 5-of-18 (27.8 percent) from long range. Duquette finished with 12 and 10 rebounds while senior Brad Drysdale added eight.

The Bears wrap up the regular season tomorrow afternoon when they travel to Brockport for a 4 p.m. game.
