Pejzlova's late goal lifts Clarkson women's hockey to 4-2 win

Two late goals propelled the third-ranked Clarkson University Women's Hockey team to a 4-2 win over Yale in Cheel Arena.

Clarkson is now 16-3-4 overall this season with a 10-0-1 ECAC Hockey record. Yale drops to 5-10-3 overall and 3-7-1 in conference. The Green and Gold are unbeaten in 17 straight games (14-0-3).

"I thought we came out well in the first period, but thought some rust from the long break started to show in the second and third," stated Head Coach Matt Desrosiers. "We were a little soft on pucks which created some sloppy play at times but we did a good job sticking with it and making some plays when we needed to. I was really happy with the way we responded after their goal to tie the game as well. We didn't allow it to rattle us and came out hard the next shift to get the go ahead goal. There is lots we can take away from this game heading into tomorrow where we need to get another two league points."

Clarkson took a 1-0 lead on its first power-play goal in three games. It was Ella Shelton who scored the goal when she let loose a powerful shot that caught the underside of the crossbar and went in. The goal came 11:34 into the first period with just four seconds remaining on the power-play.

Yale tied the game the first time with a goal 7:40 into the middle frame. Eden Murray fed Krista Yip-Chuck on the right side and Yip-Chuck scored on a low shot from a tight angle.

The Golden Knights regained the lead at 6:42 into the third period. During a scramble in front of the Yale goal, Loren Gabel was able to direct the puck to Amanda Titus who scored.

Clarkson pressed forward hoping to score a third goal and put the game to bed. However, a Clarkson penalty gave Yale the chance they needed to score a goal of its own. The Bulldogs took advantage, scoring just ten seconds into the power-play to tie the game. It was Taylor Marchin who scored on a slap shot from the blue line.

The tie was short lived though, with the Golden Knights regaining the lead just 35 seconds later. Co-captain Cayley Mercer sent a pass to assistant captain Genevieve Bannon who drove into the Yale end. Bannon slowed up and dropped a pass to Michaela Pejzlova, who snapped a quick wrist shot that scored. Clarkson added another goal at 18:14, through the same trio. This time it was Pejzlova feeding Mercer and Clarkson's leading scorer was able to skate in on the Yale goaltender and finish to ice the game.

Clarkson finished with a 31-15 advantage in shots. The Green and Gold were 1-4 on the power-play while Yale was 1-2 on extra man opportunities. Shea Tiley made 13 saves for Clarkson while Tera Hofmann had 27 stops for Yale.

Clarkson will continue its homestand with a game against Brown tomorrow at 3:00 pm.
