Hoboken, NJ – Francesco Palumbo drove in three runs and Wilson Matos and Brett Hoberman posted four hit days as the SUNY Canton baseball team split a pair of Empire 8 conference games at Stevens Institute of Technology on Saturday.

The Roos (4-12, 1-2 E8) won the opener 5-3 in eight innings before dropping the nightcap to the Ducks (12-10, 5-2 E8) by a score of 10-8.

Game 1

Palumbo went 2-for-4 with 3 RBI in the opener, while Brett Hoberman went 2-for-3 and drove in a pair of runs. The seven-inning game went into extras where the Roos plated a pair of runs in the top of the eighth off a pair of Hoberman and Palumbo RBI singles.

Zack Newman earned the win striking out three batters and giving up just one hit over two innings of scoreless relief. Derrek DuPont earned the no-decision with three strike outs and three walks on three earned runs in six innings.

Game 2

Stevens struck for four runs in the first and added three runs in the fourth and fifth innings to secure a 10-8 win in the nightcap. The Roos ran three runs across in the third and added five in the fifth and sixth innings as they looked to stage a late rally.

Wilson Matos led the offense with a 3-for-4 effort scoring three times and driving in three runs as he came up just a home run short of hitting for the cycle. Travis Schindler and Brett Hoberman added two hits each, while Schindler finished with a pair of RBI.

Collin Trathen took the loss giving up four earned runs on three walks in less than an inning of work. Quinn DiPasquale took the win for the Ducks giving up three earned runs with nine strike outs and five walks in five innings.

The baseball team is back in action on Monday when it visits Oswego State for a doubleheader at 2 p.m.
