Palermo and Fernandez lead Saints baseball to 12-5 win

Bryan Palermo had four hits and scored four times and Chris Fernandez added three hits to back four innings of scoreless relief from Mike Dell'Olio as St. Lawrence University's baseball team improved to 3-1 on its Florida trip with a 12-5 win over Salem State on Monday.

The Saints jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the top of the first as Brian Magovney plated Palermo with a two-out single, Devin Robson doubled to drive in Magovney and Fernandez, who was Liberty League Player of the Week based on the first three games of the season, singled home Robson.

The Vikings got one back off Saint starter Kevin Prindle in the bottom of the first, and cut it to 3-2 in the bottom of the fourth. The Saints went back up 5-2 with two in the top of the fifth on Mark Syron's triple, a wild pitch, Palermo's single followed by two stolen bases and a single by Khifer O'Connor. Salem tied it at 5-5 in the bottom of the inning with a two out rally which produced three unearned runs.

Dell'Olio took over in the bottom of the sixth and shut the Vikings out on three hits the rest of the way. The Saints scored two in the top of the inning to make him the winner as Andrew Schreyack delived a run-scoring single and Mic Regan singled to drive in the second run. The Saints added a run in the seventh on Palermo's single and Magovney's double and put up four more in the top of the ninth on run-scoring singles by Palermo and Fernandez, a sacrifice fly by Magovney and a run scoring triple from Robson.

The Saints are idle Tuesday and will return to action against Salve Regina on Wednesday at 1 p.m.
