Sophomore defenseman Kirsten Padalis recorded her first career three-point game and first-year goaltender Brooke Wolejko made 15 saves and earned an assist en route to her first collegiate victory as the St. Lawrence women's hockey team completed a weekend sweep with a 3-1 win over Robert Morris on Saturday afternoon.
"It was a solid effort today," Head Coach Chris Wells said. "Robert Morris came out strong and sustained the play for many stretches. We did a good job settling into our game and scored some big goals at the right time. We can take plenty of positives away from today's effort."
Robert Morris controlled the pace of the play throughout much of the first period, despite being outshot 11-7 and going into the first intermission 0-0.
It took Padalis and the Saints just over a minute into the second period to cash in on a scoring opportunity and swing the momentum in favor of the Scarlet and Brown.
Kayla Ranwisky played the puck from beneath the red line out in front of the net for Kailee Heidersbach who touched a pass to Padalis on the top of the left circle. The Farmington, Mich. native teed up a shot and beat the Colonials' Jessica Dodds for her first goal of the season.
The Saints carried a 1-0 lead into the final period and it was Padalis who helped set up Brooke Webster for the Saints second goal, and eventual game winner, at the 4:42 mark.
Padalis stopped the puck behind Wolejko's net after a dump-in by the Colonials and then carried into the Saints offensive zone along the left wall. After she had gained the line, Padalis sent the puck deep to Webster who snapped off a wrist shot and snuck the puck in between Dodds and the near post for her team-leading fifth goal of the season.
After Robert Morris' Katelyn Scott was called for tripping midway through the third period, the Saints extended the lead to 3-0 on a power-play marker by junior Jenna Marks.
Wolejko started the scoring play for the Saints after stopping a Robert Morris clear at the side of her net and playing the puck behind to Padalis who carried the puck deep into the Colonials zone and hitting Marks at the top of the left circle. Marks ripped a laser along the ice that rang off the far post and into the net for her third of the season.
At the 16:30 mark of the final period, Rikki Meilleur spoiled Wolejko's shutout bid on a feed from Mikaela Lowater, but that was the only offense the Colonials could muster against the first year. She finished with 15 saves, while Dodds stopped 29 for Robert Morris.
With the win, the Saints improve to 3-2-1 on the year, while the Colonials fall to 2-6-0.
