Troy, NY - With scoring chances at a premium, Friday afternoon's game between the Clarkson University Women's Soccer team and Rensselaer looked like it was headed for a scoreless tie. However, the Engineers took advantage on their one shot in overtime, scoring in the 97th minute, to send the Golden Knights to their second straight conference defeat, 1-0.
The Golden Knights are now 7-4-0 overall and 1-4-0 in the Liberty League standings, needing a victory badly against Union College to stay afloat in the post-season conference chase. Rensselaer nearly evened their overall record at 5-6-1 overall while improving to 2-2-0 in conference games.
In the first half, each team had just one shot and no corner kick chances as the ball stayed in the middle of the field. That changed to a normalized rate in the second half as the Golden Knights had five shots and put much more pressure on the RPI defense. However, it was the Engineers that would finally break through in extra-time as Shannon Maguire scored at the 96:03 mark from Kirsten Bombardier to give RPI the sudden-death victory.
Clarkson had narrow advantages in shots (6-5) and corner kicks (3-2). Stephanie Vargas made five saves for RPI, while Brianna Thibeau (Salem, NY) was called upon twice to make saves, stopping one shot but allowing the game-winner in overtime.
