POTSDAM -- Junior captain Chris Schrum (Manhattan, N.Y./Millennium) scores overtime goal to send the SUNY Potsdam men's soccer team (1-0-1) to a 2-1 victory over the Salve Regina University (0-2) in the final day of the Best Western Plus Cardinal Classic. Sophomore forward Connor DeSantis (Rotterdam, N.Y./Mohonasen) scored the other Bear goal, while senior goalkeeper Nick Davies (Webster, N.Y./Webster Thomas) finished with five saves. Junior defender Matthew Wagner (Broxville, N.Y./Bronxville) and Schrum were each named to the all-tournament team

Both teams were limited in the offensive category during the first 45 minutes with only four shots for the Bears and five for the Seahawks with Davies making one save and Bryan McCormack stopping two. Play started to get physical toward the end of the half with the first yellow card being issued to the Bears at the 1:34 minute mark. The time ticked off the clock and the score remained knotted at zero.

Things remained heated going into the second half with the next yellow card being issued to Salve Regina's goalie McCormack at 4:08, which awarded Schrum a penalty kick. The shot ended up going wide to keep the score at zero. Over the next 20 minutes of play, three more yellow cards were handed out to the Bears before Potsdam found the back of the net at 20:32. Freshman forward Brandon Igiehon (Dublin, Ireland/Channel View School) picked up his first assist of the season when he sent a pass to DeSantis, who turned and shot the ball into the left corner to break up the tie. Defense picked up for both teams over the next 20 minutes before the Seahawks knotted the game back up with a goal from Evan MacDonald that hit the crossbar and went in. Potsdam created one more scoring opportunity, but sophomore midfielder Jorge Ferrer's (Syracuse, N.Y./Henninger) shot sailed high and regulation ended

The Bears kept the offensive pressure turned up during the first few minutes of overtime before Schrum intercepted a clear and his shot found the bottom left corner of the goal to put the game away.

McCormack made two saves on the day for Salve Regina.

The Bears edged the Seahawks in shots 12-11 and Salve Regina finished with three corner kicks to Potsdam's one.

The Bears are back in action on Tuesday, Sept. 6, when they host SUNY Canton at 7 p.m.
