Oswego uses second half streak to down Clarkson men's hoops, 73-58

Potsdam, NY - A pair of solid second half runs bolstered by 3-point shooting allowed Oswego State to defeat the Clarkson University Men's Basketball team Tuesday evening at Maxcy Hall.

The Golden Knights fell to 1-4 overall and will head to Schenectady this weekend to compete in their second tournament in 10 days. Oswego State improved to 4-0 on the young campaign.

The first half saw both teams go back and forth with Clarkson utilizing a strong performance from the 3-point arc. Oswego shot 65.2% in the first half (15-for-23), but couldn't shake the Knights as 3-pointers from Drew Zlogar and Tom Nuttle gave Clarkson brief one-point leads. Oswego went on an 8-0 run in the course of 2:28 to turn a one-point deficit into a seven-point lead, but that advantage shrunk to four points by halftime.

In the second half, the Lakers opened with a 16-4 run in the first five minutes to turn their four-point lead into a 16-point margin. Clarkson pulled back to within 12 with about eight minutes to go, but Oswego once again recorded a pair of 3-pointers from Dustin Pond and Kyle Covley to bookend a 10-2 run and gain a 20-point lead. Down the stretch, the Knights were able to get back into the teens for a deficit, but could not get any closer.

Senior Felix Abongo scored 12 of his game-high 19 points in the second half, shooting 8-for-10 from the floor, and also chipped in five assists. Derek Hart shot 5-for-8 from the field to record 10 poitns and he also added in five rebounds and three blocks. Drew Zlogar shot 50 percent from the field and tossed in 16 points with six rebounds coming off the bench. Brian Sortino scored a team-high 17 points, all of which came in the first half, and also produced a team-best five assists. Kyle Covley added 14 points, going 5-for-9 from the field, and Keith Tyson also shot 5-for-9 to score 10 points. Walter Sampson was the fourth Laker to reach double-figures with 10 points.
