OSWEGO, N.Y.—Oswego State (6-8, 2-3 SUNYAC) scored five straight goals late to hand the SUNY Potsdam men's lacrosse team (9-5, 2-3) a 10-8 defeat for its fourth straight loss. Junior midfielder Matt Moran (Watertown, N.Y./Immaculate Heart) led the Bears with two goals and two assists. Senior midfielders Pat Bonafede (Churchville, N.Y./Churchville-Chili) and Brian Martin (Fairport, N.Y./Fairport) each scored twice.
The contest was a back-and-forth, physical, one-goal battle through the first 45 minutes. Bonafede opened the scoring at 12:16 and Moran netted Potsdam's next two goals at 6:37 and 1:04, respectively. Each time the Bears scored, the Lakers answered. Potsdam led 3-2 after one quarter.
Oswego scored the only two goals of the second quarter and took a 4-3 lead into the break.
Potsdam outscored the Lakers 3-1 in the third to grab a 6-5 lead after 45 minutes. Senior midfielder Matt Kennedy (Clay, N.Y./Cicero-North Syracuse) buried a feed from sophomore midfielder Nick Orsini (Fairport, N.Y./Fairport) at 11:49. Just over a minute later, Moran set up Martin's first to make it 5-4 Bears. After another Laker goal, Moran assisted on Martin's second with 51 seconds to go in the quarter.
Oswego took control of the contest with five goals in a row to open the fourth and build a commanding 10-6 lead. Potsdam outshot the Lakers 18-7 in the final quarter, but were frustrated by Oswego goalie Wyatt Russo's six saves. The pressure exerted by the Bears didn't pay off until time was running out. With 2:09 remaining, sophomore attackman Eric Soderquist (Watertown, N.Y./Watertown) scored with an assist from senior captain Ed Doherty (Amherst, N.Y./Amherst). Bonafede struck with 22 seconds left to close the scoring at 10-8.
In goal, senior captain Pete Gropp (Fairport, N.Y./Fairport) made 12 saves and Russo stopped 19 Potsdam attempts for the win.
The Bears outshot the Lakers 56-34, but Oswego won the faceoff (13-8) and ground ball battles (33-29). Potsdam was 0-for-2 on the man advantage and the Lakers were 0-for-7.
The Bears travel to second place Brockport on Saturday for a 1 p.m. contest. Potsdam needs a win to reach the playoffs for the fourth straight season.
