POTSDAM, N.Y.—SUNY Oneonta (8-6-1, 4-3 SUNYAC) rallied from an early deficit to defeat the SUNY Potsdam women's lacrosse team (4-11, 1-6) 21-11 on Tuesday afternoon. Junior midfielder Cayla O'Connor (Dexter, N.Y./General Brown) led the Bears with four goals, an assist and game-high seven draw controls. Sophomore attack Alli Stark (Walworth, N.Y./Gananda) scored a career-high four goals and senior captain Rachael Huntley (Canton, N.Y./Hugh C. Williams) added two goals and two assists.
Potsdam opened the contest with three of the first four goals. O'Connor began the scoring with a free-position marker at 26:41. Huntley set up Stark at 24:09 and O'Connor struck again at 23:39 to make it 3-1. Red Dragons freshman attack Sophia Calabrese (Bethlehem, N.Y./Bethlehem) began a 5-0 run just 38 seconds later. She netted three goals during the stretch with the other two from sophomore attack Shannon Giddens (Franklin Square, N.Y./H Frank Carey), who also scored Oneonta's first goal, and freshman midfielder Haley Vermette (Brewster, N.Y./North Salem) for a 6-3 lead at 14:22. Less than a minute later, O'Connor set up sophomore midfielder Alexa Ferrer (Warwick, N.Y./Warwick Valley) to get Potsdam within two. However, the Red Dragons answered again with a 5-0 run. Senior attack Taylor Casey (Garden City South, N.Y./Kellenberg Memorial) scored three times during the stretch and Oneonta led 11-4 at 8:26. Huntley countered at 2:54 and then set up Stark with 2:17 left. Oneonta sophomore midfielder Erin Fowler (East Meadow, N.Y./East Meadow) scored 58 seconds later and the Red Dragons took an 11-6 lead into the break.
The teams traded the first four goals of the second half. Casey scored her fourth 1:28 into the final period before O'Connor made it a 13-7 game with a man-up goal at 27:17. Junior midfielder Kelsey Cohen (Baldwin, N.Y./Baldwin) struck at 23:20 and Stark added another man-up tally at 21:49 to make it 14-8. Oneonta countered with their third five-goal run of the day from five different scorers, including Casey and Cohen, to put the game out of reach at 19-8 with 14:11 to play. The Bears outscored the Red Dragons 3-2 over the rest of the contest. Huntley notched her second at 11:54 and Stark and O'Connor scored in succession at 6:00 and 3:20.
Sophomore goalie Kayla McCabe (Watertown, N.Y./General Brown) made seven saves for the Bears and Oneonta junior Jaclyn Marry (Long Beach, N.Y./Long Beach) matched her for the win.
Potsdam returns to action on Saturday when the Bears host No. 23 SUNY Geneseo on Senior Day. The contest has moved from a 1 p.m. to a noon start time.
