Oneonta State takes two from Potsdam softball

The SUNY Potsdam softball team held its home opener on Friday afternoon in a doubleheader with conference opponent Oneonta State and dropped games 8-0 and 7-0.

In game one, Red Dragons freshman pitcher Sabrina DeAngelis (9-5) struck out 10 in a one-hit shutout.

Senior third baseman Molly McCuin (Winthrop, N.Y. / St. Lawrence Central) had the lone hit for the Bears (2-16 overall, 1-5 SUNYAC).

Oneonta designated player Traci Lichtenstein had a big day at the dish, batting 2-for-5 with two runs scored and four RBI.

Lichtenstein got the Red Dragons (18-9 overall, 8-3 SUNYAC) off to the fast start by doubling to right-center field to send home Jamie Whittam in the first inning. In the fourth inning, she clubbed a three-run home run by bounced off the top of the fence.

Third baseman Jenn Brocco batted 2-for-5 with a double, single and three RBI.

Senior Megan Johnson (Heuvelton, N.Y. / Heuvelton) struck out three, walked three and allowed seven runs in five innings pitched for Potsdam.

In game two, Potsdam created some more opportunities on offense. Noelle Rufa (Helena, N.Y. / St. Lawrence Central) batted 2-for-3 with a double. Katie Marsman (Wantagh, N.Y. / Wantagh) and McCuin also doubled for the Bears.

Brittany Thivierge (Schuylerville, N.Y. / Schuylerville) , Alexis Lerman (Fayetteville, N.Y. / Fayetteville) and Brittaney Barr (Ogdensburg, N.Y. / OFA) all had a hit apiece as well.

The top five hitters for Oneonta all drove at least one run with Whittam hitting 2-for-4 with three runs scored and a RBI, Brocco going 2-for-4 with a double and a RBI and Lichtenstein collecting a two-run double. Brianna Rivera and Nicole Marzillo each had a RBI as well.

Senior Megan Briner (Corinth, N.Y. / Corinth) went the distance for Potsdam as did not walk or strike out a batter. She allowed six earned runs on 12 hits.

Rachel Hitt picked up the victory for Oneonta as she went four innings, struck out four and allowed no runs on five hits.

Potsdam will take the field on Saturday against SUNYAC opponent New Paltz for another doubleheader. First pitch is scheduled for 12 p.m.
