ONEONTA, N.Y.—Oneonta State (1-8, 1-1 SUNYAC) jumped out to a big lead early, but needed two goals in the last three minutes to defeat the SUNY Potsdam women’s lacrosse team (4-6, 0-2), 12-10, in a SUNYAC contest on Tuesday afternoon. Rebecca Monteith scored five goals, including the game-winner, and Caroline Tulley added three for the Red Dragons. Potsdam juniors Carly Richards (Niskayuna, N.Y./Niskayuna) and Maribeth Simmons (Clinton, Conn./The Morgan School) matched their efforts with five and three goals, respectively.
Oneonta opened the game with a 6-0 run through the first 16 minutes, but Potsdam closed the half with a 5-2 stretch of its own. Junior Whitney Boshart (Calcium, N.Y./Indian River) got the Bears on the board at the 13:03 mark. After another Red Dragon marker two minutes later, Richards went on a 3-0 run of her own to close the gap to 7-4. Oneonta added an eighth tally at 1:02, but Simmons beat the clock and scored with one second left. Potsdam trailed 8-5 at the half.
The Red Dragons struck first in the second half, but Simmons scored the next two followed by one from junior Sierra Langkammerer (Fayetteville, N.Y./Fayetteville-Manlius) and the Bears trailed 9-8. With 6:58 remaining, Monteith capitalized on a free position extending the lead back to two goals. Richards answered with two goals in a 32-span and the game was tied at 10 with 5:11 to play. Monteith carried Oneonta to victory with the eventual game-winner at the 2:39 mark. She then added some insurance with her fifth goal coming with just four seconds left.
In goal, Potsdam junior Kaci Milligan (Liverpool, N.Y./Bishop Ludden) made seven saves, while Oneonta’s Annelise Muscietta stopped six shots for the win.
The Red Dragon’s outshot the Bears 25-21 and collected 35 groundballs to Potsdam’s 22.
Next, the Bears head to Geneseo on Saturday, April 9, for a 1 p.m. SUNYAC match-up with the Blue Knights.
