Oneonta downs Potsdam women's basketball

ONEONTA, N.Y.— Freshman guard Drew Dufrane (Liverpool, N.Y./Liverpool) recorded 23 points with a career-high seven threes, in the SUNY Potsdam women's basketball team's (3-20, 1-16 SUNYAC) 67-44 loss to SUNY Oneonta (14-10, 11-6 SUNYAC) Friday evening. Junior forward Emily Drake (Athens, N.Y./Coxsackie-Athens) had six points and 11 rebounds, while senior guard Meghan Driscoll (Troy, N.Y./Troy) had six points and three assists.

Potsdam put points on the board first with a lay-up from Drake. The Bears were up 6-5 with 4:09 left until Oneonta's Leanne Corso started an 11-0 run to end the first quarter. During the run Corso had four points and Kathryn Polletta had seven.

The Red Dragons began the second quarter with back-to-back three's from Polletta. Their run was stopped by a Drake jumper. With 3:52 left, Dufrane hit a three and with two and a half minutes later Driscoll sank another three to bring the deficit to 13. However, this did not stop Oneonta as they ended the half on an 8-0 run, making the score 35-14.

For the first three minutes of the third, the Bears went on a 10-0 push to cut the lead to 11. During the stretch Dufrane had eight of the points. The rest of the quarter went back and forth. Even though Potsdam outscored them 18-13 in the quarter, the Bears still trailed 32-48.

The Red Dragons started the fourth quarter on a 10-0 stretch, until Dufrane hit another three to with 4:33 left. The game ended with junior forward Lindsey Casler (Oneida, N.Y./Oneida) hitting a jump shot to score her first career points. Oneonta came out with a 67-44 victory.

The Red Dragons had three players score double digits. Polletta came off the bench and led her team with 18 points and eight rebounds. Corso secured a double-double with 16 points and 14 rebounds. Casey Hayes, who also came off the bench, scored 10 points.

Cortland shot 35 percent from the field while Potsdam shot 21 percent. Cortland also outrebounded Potsdam 58 to 47, but Potsdam committed fewer turnovers (10-13).

Potsdam is back in action Saturday afternoon at 4 p.m. as the Bears wrap up the 2016-2017 season at SUNY New Paltz.
