CANTON, N.Y.—Freshman goalie Devan Olschewske (Canandaigua, N.Y./Canandaigua Academy) made 20 saves to earn a victory in her first career start as the SUNY Potsdam women's lacrosse team (2-2) defeated SUNY Canton (1-3) 10-8 on Friday afternoon. Four different Bears scored two goals and sophomore attack Bri McClusky (Watertown, N.Y./Immaculate Heart) to lead Potsdam past the Kangaroos.

The Roos opened the scoring nearly eight minutes into the contest as Nikki Holmes made it 1-0 at the 22:09 mark. Potsdam answered with two tallies in 35 seconds apart from junior captain Margaret Wall (Rochester, N.Y./Aquinas) and sophomore defender Maggie McCabe (Camillus, N.Y./West Genesee) to grab its first lead of the contest. After Canton tied the score at 2-2 with a free position goal from Keely Rice at 15:52, junior attack Bailey Weigel (East Amherst/Williamsville East) put the Bears back on top at 15:13 with a helper from McClusky. Wall notched her second with a free position marker just 32 seconds later for a 4-2 Potsdam advantage. Rice scored her second at 10:36 and Roo Robyn Carroll tied the game at 4-4 at 6:29. The Bears closed the half with another 2-0 run in a 30-second span on goals from senior attack Michelle Varney (Canton, N.Y./High C. Williams) at 5:06 and McClusky at 4:36. Freshman attack Katie Lapinski (Canton, N.Y./High C. Williams) assisted on Varney's goal. Olschewske was sharp under pressure making 11 saves in the first half.

Tressa Goolden got Canton to within 6-5 just 2:46 into the final period, but Potsdam answered with three straight. Freshman attack Mariah Pierce (Syracuse, N.Y./Westhill) buried a feed from McClusky at 23:26 for her first career tally. Weigel followed with an unassisted marker nearly six minutes later and Pierce closed the run with her second of the game at 14:02 to make it 9-5 on another helper from McClusky. Goolden ended the run just over five minutes later with two in a row and Canton trialed by two with 6:07 left. Varney answered 17 seconds later with her second goal to return Potsdam's three-goal lead. Carroll got the Roos back to within 10-8 24 seconds after that, but that's as close as Canton would get.

Olschewske's 20 stops were the most by a Bear goalie since Kaci Milligan '12 made 20 against Bridgewater State on March 8, 2011. Roo goalie Becca Keiffer turned aside nine Potsdam attempts. The Bears outshot the Roos 37-28 on the day.

Potsdam will now escape the snow and cold for two games at the Spring Fling Tournament in West Palm Beach, Fla. The Bears face Concordia University (Wis.) at 11:30 a.m. on Tuesday and RIT at the same time on next Thursday.
